My main HD is partitioned into C:System and F: Storage and I also have a second HD partitioned into D:Data and G: Backups.

I used Windows 7 to create a System Image of C:System on G:Backups.

Today I tried to Restore this image for the first time. I skipped the data backup as none of my data is on C:, restarted, selected my keyboard and was then offered 2 choices.

    (1) Format & repartition disks: Select this to delete any existing partitions and reformat all drives on this computer to match the layout of the system image.
    (2) If you are unable to select an option above, installing the drivers for the disks you are restoring might solve the problem.

The first (and only choice since I wished to Restore rather than just install drivers) was a terrifying prospect considering all the programs, data, images etc that I had stored on on the other 3 partitions so I declined and setttled for a simple Restore of a Restore Point and sfc /scannow, hoping to solve my problem that way.

For years I have used programs such as Acronis True Image and lately Paragon Backup & Restore with no problems. Just accepting all the defaults a Restore would result in a successful restore on C: without disturbing any other partition. How am I to interpret the dialogue from Windows Restore? Is the only way I can recover my system image to lose all my partitions and all my data?

You will find that Windows built in image program is not very popular on this site but i have used it for several months and never had any problems with it.
When you come to the screen you are describing above just hit next. Do not check ether option. it will then start the restore process.
I do this everytime i make a new image and have never had a problem.

I believe those are only options and you would have been able to click Next without selecting either:

By not selecting the format and repartition option your image will be restored and other partitions untouched such as valuable data partitions.

        bwc and BruceR,

Thank you. I made a new image using Paraqon for safety, then created a new image with Win 7 and then on restoring just ignored the options and clicked on Next and it automatically restored just my C: drive. Just another example of Microsoft’s clear instructions I guess.
