• Windows 8 and DropBox

I have various things set up so that I can simply use the latest version of a file. I have an encrypted file for passwords using eWallet, for example, on my phone and on my home and work computers. By putting the file into a dropbox folder I can use the latest version at home or at work.

The version of DropBox for Windows 8 works like the web browser. I can download and upload files; but they don’t automatically sync, as they did in Windows 7. The only option I can see is to switch to something like Google Drive – which seems to do in Windows 8 what DropBox did. But I’ve paid for additional storage in DropBox…

Is anybody aware if this is likely to be fixed in Windows 8, anytime soon? Should I try to get my money back from DropBox?

If you’re using the W8 app version, it probably has need of further development before it has all the features available. The desktop application version should work just as it does with Windows 7.

I don’t know how to get the “desktop application version”.

Get it from here using your browser:
      https://www.dropbox.com/install

This version will only work on the Windows 8 desktop, not the Metro IF.

“Desktop application version” means a conventional Windows EXE program, not a Metro “app”.

As far as I can tell, Windows 8 doesn’t permit me to install standard Windows EXE programmes.

But now it won’t download files without “Network Error”. 5 attempts just now to download the installation file, and it’s reached between 0.3 & 3.1 MB before saying “Network Error and stopping the download (using Chrome – I can’t seem to make downloads work at all in IE).

I am beginning to hate Windows 8 with a vengeance!

Are you running a Windows 8 RT box by any chance? (Microsoft Surface or similar device) or are you running a standard Laptop or Desktop with Windows 8.

A standard laptop. I’ve just upgraded it to Windows 8 Pro.

I’ve been unable to download the DropBox installation file; and so I tried to download the Firefox one, thinking it might be a problem with IE and Chrome – but I can’t download or complete the firefox installation either.

To check that it isn’t a problem with the wifi I used a different laptop running Windows 7 and downloaded the DropBox installation file without any problems there.

I also tried disabling the (Norton 360) Firewall – no difference.

I’ve copied the installation file from the windows 7 laptop to the new windows 8 (now Pro) laptop, and it ran and installed. Hurray! Sorted.

This is working -but it is taking a ridiculously long time to sync. Right now it reports “68 files, 97.9kB/sec, 27 hr left”.

I think that’s why you are/were getting the download errors earlier, W8 seems to time out much easier than other operating systems, sometimes going so far as to blame my modem in diagnostics, all the while W7 and XP are happily connected. Do web pages with a lot of content like photos load quickly or are they taking a long time as well?
You might want to go to speedtest.net and test your connection with W8 and with another system with XP or W7. If there’s a large discrepancy, maybe see if there’s an update for your wireless or Ethernet adapter.

It seems to be working sensibly today. I can’t work out why it was so slow before…
