This week there is already a huge amount of new info coming from the MS Build conference with much more to come. Several articles are already perking my interest.

      PC World

      Win 8 Preview Release available

      PC World News List

CNet Early look at Win 8

      ZDNet Windows 8 Unveiled

      These are just a sampling.

    • #1298198

      forgot to note:

This release is NOT feature complete. This release should NOT be depended on for production work.

Server must be very busy. Have tried repeatedly w/o success. IE can not display site. Oh well, keep trying.

    • #1298225

I’ve been able to get to it quickly and easily multiple times since last night.

I can get to the Dev Center, but not the actual download.

    • #1298238

Downloads are slow but I still get them.

      Hi Ted,

Here’s a direct link to the downloads page if that is any help.

      http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516

    • #1298240

I have been there numerous times and keep getting the IE cannot display this page message. Oh well, probably not enough time to install it anyway. If I ever get it, the suggestion is to install in a virtual environment. Either that or on it’s own HD.

This is what I am getting:

      28942-ConnectionProblem

I continue to get the same error even when I sign in using my Live ID credentials.

I suspect this is because I do not have an MSDN subscription. If so I will not be able to download this file. I would think this info should have be included on the download page if this is the case.

    • #1298247

Ted, while you wait for the download server, it might pay to install Virtualbox if you don’t already have it. Then you can install this pre-Beta into that and muck about to your heart’s content without risk to your native Windows 7.

I’m quite interested in the rumours of Microsoft Security Essentials being bundled with the OS. Upsides and downsides to that, especially here in the EU where MS got severely canned for anti-competitive behaviour with IE.

    • #1298253

I already have the Virtual Box downloaded, but not installed yet. I was going to use it for a Mint OS, but never got to that. If I do get Win 8, I will make the time. Now it’s just getting the iso file.

    • #1298258

Well, I had to once again install Chrome to allow the download. It is downloading now. As Joe states, it is very slow.

      • #1298296

It is downloading now. As Joe states, it is very slow.

Just out of interest, what speed is it downloading at? Over here in the UK I’m currently downloading the package with the developer tools at a steady 1.5MB/s which is about the max my telephone line supports.

    • #1298281

If you are still having download problems you can check a site such as Betanew file forum. I’m sure there are many others too.

      Joe

      --Joe

    • #1298292

It appears the iso file download will be completed in about another half hour (total download almost 3 hours, whew)

    • #1298304

I downloaded the preview 64 Bit package without the developer tools. I did not check the actual speed, sorry. My download did finish so that tomorrow I should be able to play with virtual box and Win 8.

    • #1298311

I decided to download the full one simply because of

28 Metro style apps including the BUILD Conference app

I’m going to burn the disc and call it a night, it is nearly 4am here!

Best of luck with your playing tomorrow!

    • #1298329

I may download the complete thing at some point in time, but decided not to for now. I’ll see later. Good night, that was a late night.

I would still like to figure out why I cannot acquire the download with IE 9. I must have some security setting set wrong, but have not figured it out yet.

      • #1298456

        She’s alive!

        28947-window-8-developer-preview

Running under VirtualBox: Core i5 virtualised with 4 cores, 3GB Ram 60GB Dynamically expanding HD, bridged networking. Installed x64 with Developer Apps. Needed to find a dual Layer DVD – the ISO was > 5GB Yikes!!

Few things that I noted immediately:

It seems it doesn’t yet have Sata AHCI compatibility (or at least didn’t like the VirtualBox Sata AHCI drivers). It failed to load until I forced the virtual HD to run as the Primary IDE Master and the DVD as the Secondary IDE Master. Once that little tweak was in place, she installed as expected.

Next, a little surprise: need to log in to the OS using my Live ID. OK, not a problem, I have a Technet Pro subscription, but then a few thought’s crossed my mind: The login credentials app appeared to phone home to verify my ID – was that communicated securely? This was before the OS had loaded fully, so I wonder if that is a security risk? Second, do I need to have to enter my Live ID password every time to unlock a locked machine? I hope not, because my Live ID password is complex – deliberately so, such that it is stored in password manager, which I can’t get to until the screen is unlocked, but I can’t unlock the screen until I enter the password…..

Anyway, I logged in (this is a VM, so I could find the Live ID password from the host OS). Greeted with the App screen that I believe is called Metro. OK, let’s have a play….um Control Panel seems a good place to fool around in first. Oops, how do I get back to Metro??? Needed to run a return to default and wasted 30 minutes doing so. (Found that out later – from metro control panel go to desktop and then back to Metro).

So, next I dropped down into the Desktop. Cool, looks similar to what we expect on Win7. IE is pinned to the task bar, so lets see. Ooooh, it’s IE10, not IE9. Double check the tools about and yup, it’s IE10.0.8102.0. Cool.

OK, play about with Windows Explorer. “Office-Like” Ribbon a top of Explorer window. Um, not sure about that for now, but might be useful. Otherwise looked and felt similar to Win7.

Let’s see – Task Manager. Nice….. much improved already over earlier version, particularly the App History tab. Cool.

Drop into Control Panel from Desktop. Poke around for a bit and find something called Automatic System Maintenance, set to run at 3am. Seems like a beefed up de-frag. Looked more closely and it is as rumoured running embedded Antimalware. I’ve heard separately that this is MSE embedded in the system, which might be difficult for other AV vendors and might cause MS a headache here in the EU.

So, overall first impressions? A bit clunky and difficult to navigate a first, but once past the Metro Apps, it seems interesting. Maybe the later version will have a switch to log straight into the desktop PC’s? A bit concerned about having to use a LIVE ID to log in, especially since it then assigned my username as the first element of my Live ID, which in my case is the word “Contact”. The Metro interface – if that’s the right term for it – may be useful for tablets, but I think it will find it difficult to grab traction on the laptop and desktop environments.

Plenty more to play with. Anyone else tried it yet?

    • #1298466

Unable to install! Installed Virtual Box on my laptop. It can not find my 64 Bit processor so will not install the 64 Bit edition:

      28949-Win8DevPreError

(unable to change Bios to allow 64 Bit – My Sony Vaio laptop does not have an area in the Bios to change). My present Win 7 IS 64 Bit as can be seen:

      28948-System64Bit

I also tried to partition my HD and created a new partition for Win 8 Dev Preview, but it seems to always stop at 10% and errors with files missing and cancels installation.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this installed? I suppose I could download the 32 Bit version, but that seems somewhat counter productive.

      • #1298468

        Hi Ted,

I think the error may be because that virtualisation technology is not enabled in your bios as opposed to 64 bit versus 32 bit.

Look for VT-X or AMD-V enable/disable or similar referring to virtualisation. This page says you processor has it, so hopefully it will be exposed in the bios

    • #1298479

I find no way in my Bios to change this setting. I’m stumped. I suppose this means installing the Win 8 Dev Review is a no go for me. Darn. (wanted to say something else but decided to keep it civil)

      • #1298482

That’s a shame Ted. I just looked a bit closer at the specs of the system linked in your signature and, yes unfortunately, virtualisation is disabled.

However, I found a few sites on the web that suggest a BIOS update is available for the Sony VAIO that enables virtualisation. Might be worth a shot – but please verify that BIOS is for your model before proceeding.

    • #1298490

My processor is able to virtualize according to the Intel Processor ID Utility. I am still working on whether the Bios update will work on my model VGN-FW465J. That portion of the Sony site is down. Go figure. I’ll repost if anything good happens. If anyone else has ideas, I am all ears.

    • #1298496

I would not recommend installing the Windows 8 preview on an existing system unless you put it in a Virtual Box like Tinto tech did. There are several reports of Windows 8 hosing your system if you try to install it in a dual boot configuration with a separate partition. I think I’ll wait for the beta.

    • #1298503

In addition to post #2, remember this is a developer’s preview. It is unstable. Run it only on a machine you don’t care about or a VM where you can isolate it from everything else.

      Joe

      --Joe

      • #1298510

Definitely do not install this in anything other than a VM or a spare engineering machine!

It is not a finished product and as such is of purely academic or self training interest. From my first sight today, I think it has potential, but a long way to go before it has anything like the polish of Windows 7.

My fears of having to log in with a Live ID have been allayed. I found I could setup a new account known as a local account rather than a Live ID account. That appears to have similar charcteristics to normal accounts on systems we have seen before. I’m still anxious about the sharing of data across multiple machines when logged in using a Live ID account, but perhaps that is a feature only in the Developer Preview and not intended for the RTM next year sometime.

There are several modues that are simply not supported yet and some that don’t work as expected.

If you are not sure about installing an OS, this release is not for you, but if you can install a VM and then load the pre-beta into that, it does make for a good insight into what we may be running in a couple of years time.

        • #1298511

I believe the Live ID will be a RTM feature. This impression, which is really from reading Paul Thurrot @ winsupersite.com, is that it is meant to enable better / seamless access to online / cloud services, such as SkyDrive.

    • #1298522

it is meant to enable better / seamless access to online / cloud services, such as SkyDrive.

Which it will probably do quite well, since it all get hoovered up into Live.

When I enable a new account it defaults to a Live ID account (as administrator) unless I drill into the “More Options”. From there I get this screen:

      28954-new-account

which allows me to choose a local account, but it’s not clear at first how to get to this screen to setup a local account rather than a Live ID account. I suspect most users will drop in their Live ID if they have one, or sign up for one from the link.

Now, the bit that makes me anxious about this is the second bullet point on the Live ID option. Specifically:

Windows Live will sync settings like your browser favorites and history, shortcuts, languages, and passwords for the services you care about.

      {my highlighting}

Do I really want Windows to sync my passwords to other PC’s that I log into – such as public access machines at a Library or other potentially infected machines?

Maybe the data is heavily protected, but it seems a honey pot to me and is really quite scary, even if full of good intent.

On the plus side, when I setup a local account, after having first connected with my Live ID, the local account was automatically setup as a Standard Account (rather than admin), which is good.

I haven’t downloaded the preview (probably won’t until a beta is published), but that reference is made to Windows Live. Surely you will be able to configure what you want synced, if anything. Does this version bring specific Windows Live apps included with the OS?

Not specifically Windows Live apps, but in the Metro environment there is an “App” Store (currently unpopulated) and there are placeholders for Mail, Office and Photo Viewer in the Desktop Environment, but nothing that I think I could try to check to see what credentials are synced with a second instance of the OS.

I guess that’s the trouble with these pre-beta releases. There are more questions than answers. Will be interesting to see a timetable for the Beta and any RC releases when I suspect things will be a little clearer.

P.S. Just found a folder in c:Users called Administrator populated with the usual template folders. Seems therefore that there is still a hidden admin account – for those who might need it.

Yeah, I think the main goal of the current release was to provide developers with info on what to expect to develop apps to the new OS. Seems that they also got development tools with the machine distributed to each BUILD participant.

I things are sure to get a lot more clear with the first beta.

There seems to be updated info regarding the use of Windows Live IDs. Seems you can indeed select what to synch. Paul Thurrot wrote about it: http://www.winsupersite.com/blog/supersite-blog-39/windows8/windows-8-feature-logging-pc-windows-live-id-140721

            Interesting ruirib,

sounds like it might be useful, but at the same time a security nightmare…….

App and web site credentials. For each Metro-style app or web site that requires a logon, that authentication information will be stored with your Windows Live ID, and auto-propagated to any PC which you logon to with that ID.

If I read that correctly: if the user so chooses, all his or her secure website browsing is linked to one Live ID and password. Is that right?

To be honest, I’m not sure I’ve got that correct: it doesn’t seem intuitive that a Live ID account should hoard different credentials, and if it does, that’s a huge honey pot for attackers.

To be fair however, it may be no worse a threat than the situation at present…..I guess as “power users” commentators here do not routinely re-use the same password – However, your average Joe Public most certainly does. So crack his password and you have access to many other accounts.

Very interesting to see how that one develops though.

Update: I did find a updated Bios. Not the one Tinto pointed out, but he moved me in the right direction. I remembered my laptop originally had Vista. When I looked for my model with Vista, there indeed was a Bios Update that added the Enable/Disable option to the Bios. Success on that front. I now have Virtualization enabled in the Bios and Virtual Box installed properly.

Now the next problem, this is nuts. When installing Win 8 Dev Review, it stops after about 10 % and states missing file. It cannot find the bootmgr. The Virtual Box is on the same drive as Win 7, the virtual machine is installing on this drive. I tried to see if I could use EasyBCD to create a new MBR, but this did not work since Win 8 never did install. My Win 7 Bootmgr on on the win 7 partition. Does anyone have any idea what the next step might be. How do I get the virtual Win 8 to find the Bootmgr so it will install correctly (I’m sort of surprised it’s not on the DVD I burned from the iso file. I did validate the DVD after I burned it). Could it be a problem with the DVD? Who knows.

Excellent Ted, well done on the BIOS. VirtualBox is a real power tool that could help you evaluate all kinds of other systems (you mentioned Linux Mint earlier).

If Win8 Dev Preview did not install and now fails with a boot manager error, it suggests the DVD may be corrupt, or your VB settings are not correct. The virtual boot manager is embedded into the virtual machine and is not accessible to any utilities running under the native OS. Perhaps double check the Virtual Hard Drive and VB boot settings are correct.

    • #1298572

Tinto, Could you give some specifics on what to look for or where to check these settings, or perhaps a screen shot. This is my first venture into virtual machines and I’m sort of learning as I go. I will also attempt to burn a new DVD to ensure that is not the problem.

Sure thing Ted. There’s a few VBox setup screens here, so if Mod/Admin consider it better in a different thread, feel free to move as necessary.

Firstly my version of Virtual Box is a littler older than yours, so the screen shots will look different, but the settings should be accessible the same.

OK, Here you can see a summary of my settings:
        28962-VBox-screen-1
Note I changed the memory from 3GB down to 2GB after finding it loaded the host OS to much. I also chose to run it as Windows 7 64 Bit in the version selection as I figured that would be the most similar.

Next, let’s take a look at the System settings:
        28963-VBox-screen-2
Here the virtial motherboard runs with 2GB Ram, Boots first of the DVD, then HD and has IO APIC enabled

        Then the Processor is configured:
        28964-VBox-screen-3
With Quad core in my case

And finally hardware virtualisation and acceleration:
        28965-VBox-screen-4

Now we move onto the Display config:
        28966-VBox-screen-5
with 64MB reserved for graphics (seems ok for now, but wouldn’t play Black Ops!). Enabled 2D and 3D acceleration. Not bothered to configure remote display.

Oops: Only 5 images allowed per post, so will continue in next post with drive and storage config……

    • #1298578

      Part II

Now we carry on with the drive and storage config:
      28967-VBox-screen-6
IDE set as PIX4 and use host I/O cache

Drilling deeper into the drive config:
      28968-VBox-screen-7
The Virtual HD is configured as IDE Primary Master (this gets setup in an initial config HD screen that I show in a third post)

      …and the DVD drive:
      28969-VBox-screen-8
set to run as IDE secondary Master and use passthrough from the host drive D: (or whatever you DVD drive is).

      Lastly, networking:
      28970-VBox-screen-9
uses bridged network to the host rather than NAT.

You might ask about the audio. It doesn’t work on mine, presumably the OS doesn’t recognise the VBox drivers. Not an issue right now.

So the missing info here is the HD config see Part III.

    • #1298581

      Part III

Virtual Hard Drive setup. When you configure a new machine, the wizard will ask you if you want to use an existing virtual HD or setup a new one. You want to setup a new drive. The new Virtual Hard Drive Wizard appears:
      28971-Virtual-HD-1
      Select Next.

      Select Dynamically expanding.
      28973-Virutal-HD-dynamic
This will make sure you don’t use a huge amount of Host disk space for the VM when it’s not needed. If you want, you could choose Fixed.

      Then:
      28972-Virtual-HD-2
rename the disk something useful, such as Win8 dev preview and yo can also change the default location in your host OS. I set the size for 64Bit to 60GB max. It used around 25GB including all the Dev extras.

Finally select Finish and the new HD wizard will close and return you to the new setup wizard.

Complete the wizard and then boot the VM off the DVD – it should install as normal.

    • #1298583

Tinto, Thanks for the screen shots. This is what I have tried:

      Burned a new DVD

      28975-VBStorageSettings2

Set IDE Controller as you showed. Notice my HD is on SATA Controller

      28976-VBStorageSettings3

Set DVD Drive to install from DVD: results Failed to find bootmgr (sorry, shots 2 and 3 are reversed)

      28974-VBStorageSettings1

Even set up to run directly from iso file rather than DVD: results, same failure

Have to get ready for work. Is there a possibility something did not download properly (VirtualBox or Win8DevPreview) and that is why the installation cannot find the bootmgr or is this a secondary problem after I OK out of failure screen. I tried to get a screen shot of the Command Window this shows up in, but no go.

      Final shot added. SATA Controller:
      28977-VBSATAStorage

    • #1298585

I suppose there is a possibility that the download might be corrupt, but I would be surprised if the VBox install was bad as the screen you show looks OK.

Maybe verify the SHA checksum of the downloaded ISO against the download page here.

Then, assuming that’s OK, try disconnect the Win8DevPreview.vdi from the SATA controller and connect it to the IDE Controller in your third image above.

Burn the ISO onto a DVD and set the secondary IDE controller be the host DVD drive in pass-through mode. That should allow the VBox to boot off the DVD drive and install onto the Virtual HD mounted as a IDE device rather than SATA. I read earlier this morning that others have been successful in running as SATA, but I had a AHCI error when I first tried the Virtual HD running as SATA

    • #1298664

I’ll try this when I get a chance, but the next 2 days I’m working 12 hour shift. Just got home today after almost 13 hours. Very tired saving lives today.

9/17 – No go. Set Host drive (DVD) to Secondary Master, IDE and pass through, Set new HD (Win 8DevPreview) as Primary Master, IDE. Still got same failure. Am now downloading the iso file with Dev Tools and apps (4.8GB) Actually going much faster this am. Still have to use Google Chrome, IE9 will not connect. I must have a setting wrong in IE, but no time to figure that out. Come to think of it, When I downloaded the Win 7 with SP1 iso, had to also use Chrome. Hmmm another problem to solve, eventually! Will post back at some point in time when I try the new iso file.

The instructions shown here allow the use of the iso downloaded file directly without burning to disc. I may try that once the download finishes since I do not have a dual layer DVDs right now.

SUCCESS!!! I downloaded the full package Win 8 Dev Preview with Apps. Installed properly from the iso file on my HD. Did not burn to disk. I can only assume the first download was corrupt. It had taken almost 4 hours and did not work. This morning in downloaded the full package (4.8 GB) in less than 40 minutes. I will play with it as I have time.

Tinto, I left the file on my Sata controller and it worked fine. iso file in my downloads folder on my D Drive. Loaded Virtual Box on C Drive and installed there. Will post as I have more time to explore.

That’s great Ted! I have read that some have been successful with Sata. Don’t know why, maybe something in the different versions of VirtualBox?

Anyway, I suspect that you will be in for a bit of a culture shock having become used to Vista and Windows 7. The most important thing to remember is that the release is a preview and does not fully reflect what later versions will bring us. There are things that simply don’t work and others that are a bit clunky and difficult to figure out at first – but that’s the beauty of such an early release: we all get the opportunity to play and learn.

Having installed the OS, you can safely delete the ISO download or burn it to disk if you wanted – it no longer needs to take up disk space on your system. You can also take a backup of the virtual hard drive .vdi file and if you wish move that to another location, freeing up disk space on your laptop.

With VB installed, you also have the opportunity to run other OS’s side by side, which can greatly help in self training analysis and debug.

As for the OS itself, I have some security concerns as previously mooted, but I have found that one can configure or disable the Live ID data sharing – pity it’s enabled by default at present though. Also I’m starting to think about how I might go about supporting such an animal, especially in the residential market, when some people are going to be quite hostile to the step change being proposed in the UI.

        Interesting times……

Thanks Tinto. I might keep the iso for a while. I already deleted the corupted file, so I guess I’ll keep this one for a while. Haven’t had time to do much of anything yet. Just set display size and set internet and that’s it. Had to shut off my Mac address filter in order to connect to internet. I’ll have to see if I can find the Mac address for the VM to add it to the filter. That is just one more layer of security. Just got home, in to work at 5 am my time tomorrow. gotta go. Off Mon and Tues so may be able to play then. Have a great rest of weekend and thanks again for all your assistance.

I’ll have to see if I can find the Mac address for the VM to add it to the filter.

One of these two, depending on how your MAC filter is configured:

In your native Windows 7, go to Network and Sharing Centre, then on the right panel select Change Adapter Settings. Next, right click on the VirtualBox network adapter and select Status, followed by Details.

        or….

In the Windows Developer Preview, go to Desktop Control Panel and drill down to Network and Sharing Centre. Then as above, into Change Adapter Settings on the right, right click on the Adpater and select Status followed by details.

I suspect you’ll need the latter one, but not 100% how your network is configured and how your filter is implemented.

If you check Configuration->Firewall->Computers in OA you will get to see the and mac address for all computers in your local network, including the VMs, while they are running. If it doesn’t show, just click the Reset List button and wait a bit and it will be shown.

Tinto, once again right on, MAC filter is turned on. Posting from IE 10 Win 8 Dev Preview. Rui, tried your trick, doesn’t seem to bring it up although I’m obviously connected to the internet. Thanks also for the suggestion. Found what appears to be a bug, most likely with IE 10. The Enter key does not cause cursor to go to the next line. Hmmm!

Ted, what if you right click the network adapter icon, at the bottom of Virtual Box window and choose Network Adapters? It shows the mac address for me.

Rui, both this method and Tinto’s method worked well. MAC address filter is on. Thank to both of you. Now I have to figure out some other stuff. Is there a way to increase the overall size of the VM window. Much of my real estate on my monitor is wasted. (Found it, View, Scale view, zooms window.) Plus I still have to figure out how to capture a screen shot to post. By the way, Last Pass is working in Win 8!

      Hi Ted,

I see what you mean about enter not advancing to the next line within IE10 but control-M works.

Regarding screenshots, the old tried and trusted method of shift-print screen will capture the full screen to the clipboard in both Metro & non-Metro mode (if I may call it that.)

The next part is getting it into paint and so far the easiest way I’ve found is click the Windows key (to get back to the Metro UI) and start typing “Paint” sans quotes. The paint app should appear quick enough and simply press enter on it. Then just paste the screenshot and crop and save as required.

If in a non-Metro app, the snipping tool is available. Again, click the Windows key to bring up the Metro UI, start typing “Snipping” and click on the app when it appears. The Snipping Tool seems identical to that in Windows 7 but as yet I’ve not been able to get it to trap drop down menus and other related popup events.

Ah, the enter key works OK in Firefox. I’ve managed to crash IE10 by using the upload manager to upload a screenshot

EDIT: Maybe I should have mentioned that I am still in Win8 but now using FF.

Browni, thanks for the hints. My problem has been since the installation “Success” I have had very little time to actually play. I will hopefully get more time today as I am off for a couple of days. I am working in Win 7 for now to get through my Lounge work, then will start “Play Time”. I believe I will make a new Image before I begin “Play Time” since my last Image was just prior to installing Virtual Box and Win 8. I will also take a snapshot of my Win 8 VM ans store it because I’m not at all sure the created Image will store my VM state. Since I have saved the state, perhaps it will but I’m not sure, so better to be safe than sorry.

      The post also states this:

You can also control what’s synced by turning off all syncing or by turning off syncing per the type of setting. Available settings groups include Personalize, Themes, Ease of access, Language preferences, Apps, Web browser, Other stuff, and Some passwords.

Here is the original post at the Building Windows 8 Blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/09/26/signing-in-to-windows-8-with-a-windows-live-id.aspx

It includes additional information on some security measures to protect the account and associated data.

Having read the MSDN Blog, I’m a bit more relaxed about it now. Two-factor verification when introducing a new PC should go a long way to detecting malicious interception of one’s credentials.

There’s still the danger of any of those PC’s that are authorised becoming compromised in themselves, but that’s no different than the current situation where one might log into Live on an infected machine.

Since a few months ago, Microsoft has been improving security related to Windows live, since it has been increasing in importance, due to the cloud move and the importance it has in Windows Phone, for example. I think things are evolving in what appears to be a good direction.
