I confess I have no patience or respect for the many would be Nostradamuses who predict yet another time Microsoft’s downfall. So many have been there before…

I think that is the most I’ve ever seen Ed Bott hedge his bets, so to speak. Gotta get away from the XP references also because that was a time shortly after the great collapse of the tech bubble and everyone was in a bit of a funk.

Anyone that keeps looking for predictions or likely outcomes…wants to keep looking for predictions or likely outcomes, if ya know what I mean, so they can go with them or against them.

I look at it independently and ask the question, could Microsoft have done better to better their competitive chances? Indubitably, the answer is a huge yes. As Ed intimated in one of his hedges, they really don’t have time to screw around anymore and get it right eventually and stay neck and neck with the competition.

That second article raises some good points that so many others seem to gloss over and omit from their “Windows 8 will kill MS” articles. The points about MS being entrenched in business are not only accurate, but the crux of their business. Sure, they want to play in the consumer space, but they don’t need it to be successful. Apple holds zero, zip, nada market share in the “real” business space. What is your company’s e-mail system? Probably MS Exchange. What manages your PCs? Likely System Center. What office suite do most companies use? MS Office. I can go on of course, but there isn’t any point to it.

Anyway, the internet is full of characters like these, always keen on making the next “grand” prediction. ZDNet, for example, is full of them :P.

I’m currently watching the History Channel’s Hatfields and McCoys on BluRay, and then it feels like I’m linked into reading about a feud of equally stubborn proportions here. I’ll be up on the bridge when everyone is done wallowing in the mud.
Some of the points made in the last article were inane and/or irrelevant to the precise nature of what Microsoft is attempting, but I guess if its a point by point rebuttal to some other article, that is to be expected. Letting the doomsayers steer the conversation is a losing interest everywhere except maybe in number of page views, in my opinion.
