    Any advice / pointers welcome…
I set up my home server on Win8 (Pro N version) based on a Windows Secrets article last year and have been successful except… I was never able to get sharing working as I wished.
I set up local machine accounts on the server with the same user names / passwords as on (several) client Win7 machines that have the same user/password set, but could not get the Win8 server to share folders with specific users.
So as fallback I share all the folders with the Homegroup as read/write (not ideal but it’s just a few trusted users).
But – every time the system reboots (due to Windows Updates, or a power failure, or just an administrative reboot), all the shared folder settings revert to read only. I have to Remote Desktop in and re-share each of a half-dozen top level folders as read/write to the Homegroup.
What a pain! My old WHS installation was much more maintenance free (until a drive died and there was no facility to rebuild the array)(off topic I know).
Am I missing something on the Win8 sharing setup???
    Thanks,
    CarLoad

Have you gone to Advanced Sharing (type Advanced Sharing in search) See if everything is set up properly there.

I also had to go through the different folders I wanted to share and set up sharing individually, but I only had to do all this once. I actually had better sharing with Win 8 to Win 7 than I had with Win 7 to Win 7 PCs.

You might try using user accounts instead of Homegroup, see if it makes any difference, no direct suggestions that I can think of at the moment.

I also use the Workgroup rather than Homegroup setup.

Thanks for looking. What do you consider to be the right settings / ‘set up properly’?
I originally did set it up for user accounts (that’s why I created the local users with identical uname/pw as the other local machines)
but that did not work at all (the users specified had no access to the shared folders at all, not even Read).
That is what prompted me to fall back to sharing with the Homegroup.
I don’t see anything about using Workgroup in the settings…

Workgroup is the default network user group, so, nothing new to find there. I don’t know what might be reverting your settings, I just use Public or Shared Documents respectively depending on OS and don’t set up anything else on the system disk. I do share many non-system drives and folders though and have never run across that problem.
