I recently had a hard drive fail. A local computer repair shop, recovered my data, installed a new hard drive, and installed “Windows 11”. While waiting for the repair I bought a new HP computer with “Windows 11”. When I tried to install Windows Office 2000, I got a disc error. I didn’t have a bad disc. I tried two other backup discs. Apparently, MS not only disabled my software, by lied about it!! This is disgraceful and underhanded.

A disk error is not MS blocking anything. It’s a hardware issue.

Exactly what error message do you get?

      cheers, Paul

      Hi WSjs302:

See Andre Da Costa’s 02-Jun-2015 post in AlisonE1981’s Will Microsoft office 2000 work on Windows 10? in the MS Answers forum. I suspect you are seeing an error because Office 2000 is not compatible with newer operating systems like Win 10 / Win 11.

I used MS Office 2000 Professional on my Vista SP2 computer, and when I purchased my Win 10 Pro laptop in Aug 2019 I was unable to install that old Office 2000 product on my new computer.  I didn’t want to pay for a monthly subscription for Microsoft365 and decided it would be less expensive to purchase a new “perpetual” license for MS Office Home & Business 2019 click-to-Run (which includes MS Outlook but no MS Access) that reaches end of extended support on 14-Oct-2025.

I had no issues opening or using my files created with MS Office 2000 (e.g., .doc, .xls, etc.) in MS Office 2019 and chose to save them in the new Open XLM file formats (e.g., .docx, .xlsx) now used by newer MS Office products.

Office 2000 is way too old {and many years out of supportEOL for Office 2k was mid-July 2009} for Office 2000 to run on a modern Windows version like Windows 11

    • #2628359

Office 2003, not 2000, and all newer versions should work on Windows 11.  In versions of Outlook before 2013, it does not support modern authentication so it may not work with some email servers.  Only versions 2016 and newer get security patches.

        Hi molius:

Even that might be overly optimistic.

I believe Microsoft Office 2003 is “officially” compatible with Win 7 SP1 and older OSs. Some users have managed to install Office 2003 on machines with newer operating systems but as far as I know functionality is limited, even if Office 2003 is run in Compatibility Mode.

The MS support article Office 2003 applications are not compatible with Windows 8 that is archived on the WayBackMachine internet archive notes that “If you have a Microsoft Office 2003 suite or application on your PC, you will have problems running it on Windows 8“.

I can confirm my Aunt uses Office 2003 on her Windows 10 Pro 22H2 PC and it works just fine without any “limited” functionality.

And I’m still using Office 97 on my own Windows 10 Pro 22H2 and, although the few functions that require Internet Explorer 6 no longer work, everything else does!

BTW, neither of us have to run our Office versions in compatibility mode!

Surely at this stage you’d be better off running LibreOffice than a 24 year old version of Office? Office 2000 wouldn’t support the new Office document formats at all.

      • #2628997

        Don’t know aboout @WSjs302 but…

The reason I’m still using my 27 year old Office 97 is I created several MS Access 97 databases way back then that I still “regular” use and they can’t be accessed/updated with any of the newer versions of either MS Access or Libre Base.

I did look into converting them into the newer accdb format that’s usable with newer programs, but found the only path to do that was to first convert them using Access 2000.

Unfortunately, when I tried doing that, the forms and macros they use wouldn’t convert and I didn’t feel like spending the time & effort to recreate them in the newer format!

Besides, Office 97’s Word, Excel & PowerPoint modules still do everything I need from them so I don’t really see any reason to update to a newer program; especially since all the new “bells & whistles” of such versions would simply get in the way of what I’m using them for!

          n0ads,

I’m a subscriber to Microsoft (Office) 365 and my old .mdb files work just fine. In fact I’ve never used the .accdb format files because IMHO they lack many of the “useful” features of the old .mdb files. I’ve been using Access for over 3 decades now w/o problems on each successive version of Office, with the one exception of switching from 32 to 64 bit where I had to put the PtrSafe data type in to most of my macros.

          Ex:

          ' +-----------------------------+ +----------+
          '---------------------|Windows Function Declarations|-------------| 08/11/05 |
          ' +-----------------------------+ +----------+
Declare PtrSafe Function SHGetPathFromIDList Lib "shell32.dll" _
Alias "SHGetPathFromIDListA" (ByVal pidl As Long, _
ByVal pszPath As String) As Long

Declare PtrSafe Function SHBrowseForFolder Lib "shell32.dll" _
Alias "SHBrowseForFolderA" (lpBrowseInfo As BROWSEINFO) As Long

Of course, it could be that I’m just too honery to do it the MS way!

I’m using office 2000 pro on windows 11. no issues. I can type a document in word. print it. I use excel with no issues.  In the help file, when clicking the icons when it talks about a procedure might have issue, something about security too high in web browser (I’m assuming internet explorer). For example, the clip art gallery button. Otherwise, I have no issue using Office 2000 on Windows 11. Yes, I know it’s twenty something years old, but it works for me. Does what I need it to do. Cheers.

Eric: Are you using “Windws 11” on a new computer or the free upgrade from Microsoft??

    • #2757159

Windows 11 on brand new computer. To those that are saying it’s over 20 years old. should upgrade, security issues etc. why? it does what i need it to do. in fact i like the version better. it comes with numerous clip art where i don’t have to ‘go online’ and search. this is just an example. i’m sorry but latest and greatest isn’t always my cup of tea. if office 97 works for that person, great. i’m tired of these snowflakes always calling down, belittling, humiliating those that like to use older version of product. If it’s for home use great! [removed]. cheers

        Hey Eric,

I am also running Office 2000 on Win11.

I wonder if you have found a way to open xlxs files in 2000 excel?

This feature worked fine on Win10, but I haven’t been able to make it work on Win11.

Compatibility Pack SP3 refuses to fly on Win11.

        Any ideas? Thanks!

        • #2757450

Try installing the office ‘compatibility pack’ Microsoft released, due to Office 2007 file formats changed. .doc is now .docx for word. just like .xls. is now .xlsx for Excel. That download might still be around. it’s probably removed now so that user’s upgrade to the latest office to be able to open the office 2007+ file formats.  (office 365 subscription) There was also a service pack 2 to that download. I’m thinking the latest build of windows 11 might consider that file a ‘security risk’ (windows protection and security) so, it might remove file after downloading it; if u can find the ‘compatibility pack’ file download for office 2007. Keep me up to date. I downloaded this file last year. It may or may not be available. With this download, the user is able to open .xlsx files in Office 2000. As well as .docx. Worked on Windows 10 but not 11. Makes me wonder…. cheers! 🙂

Sorry I need more coffee! You put you ran compatibility pack, so I didn’t need to put all that extra info, describing what to do. lol on my system I am able to open up those files no issues. hmm. maybe a windows 11 update messed something up.  i installed office 2000 latest service pack. service pack 3. this is interesting.
