Windows Edge added automatically to new laptop

I know little about computer language so I’ll speak in my plain language.  I use Firefox for my browser on my Windows 10.  When I got on my HP laptop on 6/15/20 Microsoft Edge browser was covering my entire page.  I did a few things and got the page removed. There is an entire file that has been added from Microsoft Edge.  Is this a necessary file or can I remove the file ?  I’m sure its taking up room on my laptop. I just want to make sure if I remove it, I’m not removing something important that I need from Windows, to operate my laptop.

Edge is a part of Win10.
In the Settings App\Apps you can choose a different browser as your default.
You can unpin the icon from the taskbar, from the menu, and from the desktop.
You can associate file extensions (like .html and .pdf) with other browsers and/or programs.
You don’t have to use Edge as your browser.

But, removing Edge is a bit more difficult.

On June 19th of this year, Microsoft forced KB4559309–the Edge update–on to my Win10 Lenovo Thinkpad T400. After the update, I shut my laptop down, and did not do anything else that day. When I booted it on June 20th, I found that the Edge update made the laptop almost unuseable. It periodically would completely lose the mouse, and within one minute, the laptop would crowbar–black screen and boot like it had just been turned on. This would happen randomly, both working on-line or off=line.

I went to the usual, and tried to remove all the “updates” that Microsoft had downloaded over the past week (4), and removed three. But the fourth, the Edge update, could not be removed as other updates can. I spent most of the day trying to get rid of the Edge update. The only way I recovered my laptop was because I had cloned the hard drive recently. The clone went into the laptop, and I blew away the “defective” hard drive and re-cloned the “bad” drive. My laptop was back up and running, and I have another drive in case this update is, once again, forced on my laptop. Now the quandry is how to prevent this update from ever getting on any of my three Win10 laptops.

Considering I have NEVER used Edge, I don’t need this update. Is there a way to prevent it from being sent down the wire again?

Has anyone confirmed that the registry key setting works to block update 4559309?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate

DoNotUpdateToEdgeWithChromium DWORD to 1 (disabled)

Good Morning

This has just happened to me as well today with the Windows Edge added to my Win10 Home 1909 desktop computer.

It was completely unexpected as I had my updates paused until 7th July ( as always and as recommended by Woody DefCon 2).

The computer asked for a restart to install not only the Edge update (KB 4559309) but also a Cumulative (KB 4560960) and Flash (KB 4561600).

I felt I had no choice but to do a restart and the updates have installed with no problems yet apparent.

(The 2004 update is also showing but I have no intention of allowing that yet until Woody says so!!)

How is it that the updates can override the pausing system ?

I am not totally opposed to the Edge browser but do not want to use it at the moment.  What is the best way to just keep it “in reserve” for now without it impacting on my existing working methods?

Updates don’t install until the pause ends – at least not that we’ve seen reported. Are you sure it didn’t end earlier of you ended it?

Edge should not bother you unless you fire it up. Continue to use your normal browser and let us know if something unexpected happens.

Thank you for the reply.

I am certain that my “pause” timer was set for 7th July because I allowed the May pause to resume on 2nd June and installed all relevant updates at that date.  I then reset the pause for 4 increments which took the date to 30th June. Then, with no instruction from Woody to change Defcon 2 I added another 7 days to make the pause up to the allowed limit of 7th July.

I did the same with my laptop which is still showing that “Resume updates” as 7th July and so far today nothing has changed with that.

The only difference between laptop and desktop is that the desktop now also shows ‘2004 ‘ready to download (no, I’m not going to touch it !!) whereas the 2004 on the laptop shows only as an information with a yellow mark against it – don’t know if that could be involved somehow ?

So… still not sure why updates on desktop have downloaded and installed automatically 4 days early but the laptop ones are still held.  Just “computers” I suppose !!

Will leave new Edge dormant for now and watch for other users reactions-thanks again.
