This is one of those questions of “I thought I used to do this but cannot anymore”! I do use MS products as it is a work requirement, therefore feel I should use them to their best. I use properties, summaries, titles etc to help identify the file by floating the mouse cursor over the file name in explorer and getting the file details. Now I don’t appear to be able to do that on my network drives, but can still on my C: drive. I’m not sure if this change happened on a recent update to XP, or if it just happened when I wasn’t looking.

Can anyone help please.

By default, the filetip (the small info window that is displayed when you hover the mouse pointer over a file in Windows Explorer) shows a lot of details for local files, and only file type and size for network files. This seems to have been the case at least since the SP-1 update for Windows XP (the current version is SP-2). You can change it in the Windows Registry; be very careful when editing the Registry.

• Select Start | Run…
• Type regedit and press Enter.
• Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT by clicking the + to the left of it (it becomes a -)
• Click on the first key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, named *.
• It is wise to save a backup copy of this key now:
  • Select File | Export…
  • Specify a location and a name. It should be a Registration file (*.reg).
  • Click Save.
    [/list]If you want to restore the original situation, you only need to double click the .reg file you exported in Windows Explorer, or select File | Import… in RegEdit.
  • On the right hand side, you’ll see entries named InfoTip and QuickTip.
  • InfoTip lists the information displayed for local files; the list is truncated in the screenshot below, but you can see it in its entirety by double clicking it.
  • QuickTip lists the information displayed for network files; by default, this list is much shorter. You can double click it to edit categories; use InfoTip as a model. You only need to add categories you want to see.
  • Of course, you can also edit InfoTip to suit your preferences.
