Personally I use Download but don’t Install instead.

I’ve had a similar problem where I needed to shut my PC down for some reason, and the only option that would not install updates, downloaded or not, was to choose “Restart” and then push the power button once it started to reboot. But I recently discovered another way that is more elegant.

If I first logoff, then the option to “Shut Down” is presented in addition to the “Apply Updates and Shut Down.” (This is with Windows 7 Pro as well as Windows 7 Ultimate.)

For the last two days I’ve been getting an error report: Adobe Flash Player 11.08(?) has stopped working. Check Windows update for a solution.

It nevers finds a solution, but keeps getting worse and worse until the site freezes. It happens on several web sites. Have you seen anything about this?

Actually you can do a shutdown from Windows 7 without installing the updates. Just press the old ctrl-alt-delete keys and use the red shutdown button in the bottom right corner.

I haven’t seen it, but I only run Flash from inside Google Chrome.

There’s a bunch of Flash patches, though, so that might cure it.

That’s a good choice, but sometimes there are problems when re-booting will actually install the patches.
