I doubt that Microsoft will release anything for WLM 2011. I’d guess you need to upgrade to WLM 2012 and make sure it is updated.

Dear user,
In a few weeks, we will be making some changes to our email services that might impact your @outlook.com, @hotmail, @live or @msn email account. These changes will prevent your email from being delivered to the Windows Live Mail 2012 application that you use.
In order to continue using Windows Live Mail 2012 to send and receive email for your account, you need to install the latest update published here.
If you use Windows Live Mail 2012 on Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, we recommend that you switch to the built-in Mail app in Windows to stay connected and get the latest feature updates on Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
Windows Live Essentials 2009 and 2011 are not supported any more, and you will need to update to Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10 and use the Mail app, or use http://www.outlook.com. To learn more about the Mail app, please click here.
We also recommend all Windows Live Mail users on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10 and use the built-in Mail application to stay connected and get the latest feature updates.
We suggest saving this email so you can refer to it later.
Thank you for your understanding and continued use.Re-reading it now, it looks as though it’s only WLM that will be affected, not Outlook.com, so I think I am overreacting and I don’t think you will be affected at all since you don’t receive any of the specified email services through your WLM.
MS aren’t doing very well with their recent email updates! First of all they break Outlook thru Windows Update, now this!
Sorry Jerry.
I’m totally confused – been trying to find some information/solution as to why my Outlook (Office 2010) is no longer synchronising Hotmail emails – last one I have in the inbox was 11th December.
O/S Windows 7 Pro.
I’ve tried logging in and out of the online account, but nothing changes in Outlook.

It’s because you are one of the lucky ones (or unlucky depending upon your point of view) to have your Outlook.com account already migrated across from the Outlook/Hotmail server to Office 365. All users are being transferred over the next few months.
I’ve placed a link with more info below, in fact there are 3 great links there.
In summary, it involves uninstalling the Outlook / Hotmail Connector for Outlook 2010, then rebooting, then adding the account again, but this time selecting Microsoft Exchange Server, or else letting it look-up and find it automatically by itself. Personally I would also create a new profile in Outlook 2010 if you do this, to reduce scope for problems.
Anyway, those are not full instuctions just a quick overview, the link has much more info.
I am personally looking forward to having more functionality and compatability concerning aliases, delivery receipts, contact groups and other features not present in Outlook.com.
Hope this helps.
Finally someone gave me the answer to make Hotmail work with POP setup. Thank you. The key is in the OUTLOOK.COM setup.
POP support is not enabled by default, you’ll need to change this in Outlook.com.
I have searched long and hard and could not get Hotmail to work with POP.

I received an email about Outlook.com basically telling me that in a few weeks it wouldn’t work with WLM 2012 unless I clicked the link and upgraded. Well, I did click the link and it downloaded and attempted to install KB3093594 but would not install, instead I got a box as per the attached. My WLM is the 2012 version. I’ve no idea how to find out what version Outlook I am using, so I don’t know what to do next!
I am extremely frustrated about this as I have just spent a considerable amount of time and effort changing my contacts over from Tiscali/Talktalk to Outlook.com because I’ve changed my ISP and I thought I’d use an email client that isn’t tied into my ISP, so I wouldn’t have this same task if I change again.
Am I about to lose access to Outlook.com? If so, I suppose I’ll just have to labouriously change everyone over to my new ISP’s email address before that happens!

I decided to get my own domain a few years back for just this reason — I was losing my then-current email address, and I never again wanted to have to go through the process of moving everything from one email address to another.
I can get whoever I want to host my email; but I own the address. In fact, I own a bunch of addresses, because I own the domain (myname.com).
I use Windows Live Mail 2011 purely for my ISP’s email account, I access my hotmail email account separately through Outlook Mail (which since the change to Preview takes longer to open but such is progress). Both my hotmail account and my other Yahoo email accounts are accessed through bookmarks on my browser.
Will this affect me?

Thanks sylviesinc, that all makes sense as you say. It shouldn’t affect me beyond the fact that they’re pointing out that my 2011 version is no longer supported anyway.I suppose from a security point of view I should upgrade both my machines to WLM 2012 (along with upgrading my reserve browser from IE9 – also no longer being supported on Windows 7 from next month – to IE11, but I hate upgrading stuff that is working perfectly well – especially when MS’s pushing of Windows 10 is mainly behind it! I switched my main browser away from IE a while back and I suppose I should consider Thunderbird or some other mail client too.
Life is always so much simpler when change isn’t forced on one!
Don’t install their update, it’ll brake your ability to send and receive email for the MS account.
It looks like they’re trying to get rid of the Windows Live Essentials email component in favor of the REALLY s***** built in Windows Mail.
I reinstalled Windows Live Mail to working order, but the calendar in that program might not work properly.
Avoid Windows Live Mail 2012 patch KB 3093594 — it freezes Windows
Windows Live Mail Will Die Without This Update That Cripples It Anyway
Windows Live Mail 2012 crashes after mandatory update (with fix)
Thanks for the warning. It’s probably just as well I couldn’t get the update to work for me! I have realised that I can still use Outlook.com without the need for WLM and I’ve downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird now. It warns me that Tiscali/Talktalk mail isn’t encrypted but will still handle it (surprisingly I’m still getting emails into this account even though I’ve left Talktalk), so when WLM goes belly up I’m ready! I suppose I’ll have to accept W10 eventually!
Yeah, it’s the Windows Mail app in Windows Live Essentials they are after for now.
Hopefully the millions of hard core users will help put the brakes on this nonsense.
The Windows Mail app that comes as part of W10 has nowhere near the configurability
and we are sick and tired of MS pushing their crappy & over simplistic Windows store-like apps on us.
I want a fully functional DESKTOP mail client handler.
When I install the update I found I could not get full headers on MSN email. The IP info was missing. Spamcop could not process. This happen on two PCs. A system restore to 12/1/2015 fixed the problem for me. Maybe it was malware or the WLM update. I just do not know but now the problem is fixed.
A few days ago I upgraded my wife’s computer to WIN10. Shortly thereafter, her OUTLOOK 2007 quit synchronizing her HOTMAIL. I tried all of the help suggested by a GOOGLE search and in the end simply installed a copy of OFFICE 365 which included the latest version of OUTLOOK. That fixed the problem for us. Fortunately I already had the Office 365 subscription and enough copies to share with her.

I have only found this in one place. MS tells you how to setup the email using POP but they never tell you that you have to log into outlook.com and enable the use of POP email. By default it is disabled. The link below takes you to all that you need to know.

Welllll… I seem to have got Thunderbird working. With all folders. Or so it seems.
I might come back later with expletives not deleted but… for the moment… I withdraw the questions below.
See… everything comes to those who wait…
But 1 question I might add : among all the mass of double-talk from M$, is there any indication that access to Hotmail/Outlook/Live.com emails will be denied to 3rd party email clients, like Thunderbird ?
Thanks !
I have WLM 11 that never got updated to WLM 12.
I’m looking for an alternative email client that can download and store all Microsoft and Google email folders (not just INBOX), as well as my ISP’s (Optusnet.com.au).
I tried Thunderbird 38.4.0 this morning but, as far as I can see, it’s garbage.
• Will only download the INBOX for hotmail accounts because it reverts to POP3 even though it adds the account as IMAP.
• can’t order the accounts on the left side… I want them in a particular sequence, top to bottom.
I’m no expert on email functionality but those two “features” are enough for me to give it a thumbs down.
Perhaps there’s workarounds but the interface is different to those in all the online helps. Whether its Firefox or Thunderbird, Mozilla staff seem to exist just to frustrate users with nonsensical changes to stuff that woks perfectly (they need a combined IQ test and saliva test, IMO).
Is there a great free or cheap alternative that functions similar to WLM ?
Or did Microsoft destroy all the competition in previous years?
(like it did with Windows Media Centre … destroy the competition then dump the product).
Thanks for any help.
And Merry Christmas.
For whatever it’s worth, there’s always OE Classic to consider.

As I’ve stated many times before, I have been using only Windows Mail, re-activated, for my email on all my PC’s. And, I’ve set it up for many of my customers who previously used Outlook Express, on XP.
I had never even heard of “OE Classic” so, when I read Hawk’s post, I downloaded it, installed it, imported my email address book and sent my first email with it, all in less than five minutes. Seting up OE Classic to use Gmail was almost automatic, not at all like OE6 or Windows Mail. Not that either of the MS programs are hard to set up, but just a lot more detailed, and if you don’t know the details, it can really be a chore.
I may be using ‘OE Classic’ in the future, for my customers who have used Outlook Express or even Windows Mail in the past, but need an email client for Windows 10.
Thank you ‘Hawk’ and here’s wishing you Happy Holidays!

Even though I have a paid version of OE Classic, I’m still running XP with Outlook Express. I was going to set it up on XP but at the time it was lacking one feature that I wanted, although I can’t remember what.
That was about a year ago so they may have implemented it by now. They said they were planning on it. I do remember that.
It’s good to hear that it’s rated good enough to be recommended by you DrWho.
Microsoft have re-released the patch but read this carefully!
I am somewhat confused by the whole thing. Like an earlier poster I use WLM 2011 with my emails from the ISP; I also download email from gmail. When Microsoft does whatever it intends to do, I presume that WLM 2011 will still be on my computer (unless an update from Microsoft removes it) and that I will still be able to download my emails from my ISP. Will that be the case or am I missing something?
I am thinking of leaving all Microsoft email services. I have my emails backed up via Macrium Reflect. If I install another email program will I be able to load backed up emails into such a program or will there be a format problem?

This page addresses doing it in Thunderbird, other E-Mail clients may be similar:

Other pages found but many speak to changing to Outlook:

Like many of you, I too am confused by this patch issue.
I use Live Mail 2012 for business on a Win 7 system. I read that if you have Outlook (preview) you need this patch. I am not aware that I have an Outlook account so don’t know if I need to worry about this patch or whether Live Mail will stop working in the near future.
In addition, I have not received any email from Microsoft about Live Mail not working in the near future like others have.
I have, however, seen the optional patch in Windows Update. Can anyone tell me if I should ignore this optional patch or even whether I will loose Live Mail in the near future?
I doubt we’ll loose WLM 2012 in the near future, they’re certainly knocking at the door of this app. though.
MS wants to promote the Windows Mail app in it’s place, but it’s still one of their many weak and sickly “Metro” type apps
that’s too anemic for a full desktop system with need for a half decent email capability.
WLM still has a huge following so we’ll see.
“I doubt we’ll loose WLM 2012 in the near future,”
You probably are right, but that still leaves me with whether I need to patch it with this latest optional patch or not? Especially considering that I have never received any email from Microsoft about WLM 2012’s demise.
My understanding is that you only need that patch if you have any of the outlook-type email accounts accessed through WLM 2012. If you either access them through the browser or else don’t have any at all, then you don’t need the patch.
My dilemma is what to do about my WLM 2011 clients on my two home computers, whether to stick with WLM 2011 now it’s no longer supported (not that I can remember when it was last updated or patched), upgrade to WLM 2012 (without the patch which if I’m right I don’t need as I access my hotmail accounts through the browser (Chrome) so that I only use WLM 2011 for my ISP email account), or switch to an independent email client like Thunderbird whose developers are looking to offload it.

I installed the first patch that was offered and it broke WLM, I was then forced to reinstall.
So don’t even bother with it since everything is already working fine. [ignore the patch]
