I use Mailwasher Pro as a filter for my e-mails and have Windows Live Mail set to not autonatically download. This has never given me any problems over the years whilst working with Vista and Outlook Express, but since upgrading to Windows 7 I find that WLM picks up some e-mails despite being set neither to send/receive messages at startup or to do any other checking for messages.

There seems to be no consistency in what is downloaded. Sometimes the messages are spam – the usual on-line pharmacies, etc. – but others are regular, acceptable e-mails. For instance, I receive 4 e-mails – cartoon strips – from an e-zine organisation daily. Sometimes one of these will come through, sometimes another. At the same time, Mailwasher will be picking up any other e-mails on the server, but these that have been downloaded don’t appear there.

(Hope people are following my expanation !)

Another problem I have is that some of my e-mails are being sent to the Junk Mail folder ALTHOUGH I HAVE JUNK MAIL FILTERING TURNED OFF IN WLM !

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated ; at present these problems are nuisances but I want to solve them before it becomes a real problem. Of course, that’s not t say I haven’t missed something obvious myself in the settings ! 🙂

Hi Ray, do you have a Windows Live ID for signing in to WLM although its not required. Have you made any settings in ‘Safety Options’ on the ‘Safe’ & ‘Blocked’ list.

No, I don’t use a Windows Live ID ; I haven’t got anything on either “whiote” or “black” lists in WLM as I rely on my settings in Mailwasher.

Funnily enough, WLM has just downloaded an e-mail from a relative that never appeared in Mailwasher. Why should it be downloading ANYTHING – even if I didn’t have a separate programme filtering things – when I’ve set it not to download automatically ?

Hi Ray, as I don’t use Mailwasher, I can’t help.

Thanks, but i don’t think the problem is with Mailwasher ; WLM is set not to automatically receive messages and yet it still does, intermittently. It’s set NOT to use its own Junk Mail filter yet it does !

To clarify, Mailwasher isn’t controlling WLM ; all it does is display new e-mails, allow me to decide what to do with them, deletes any I don’t want from the server then opens up WLM ; I still have to then tell WLM to read the messages.

Why not try WLM settings without using Mailwasher for a few days.

If you have more than one email account setup in WLM double check the settings for each to make sure you aren’t bypassing MailWasher on one.

Thanks for that Joe – I’d already thought of that. I do have another account, barely used but set up in exactly the same way. in fact, I’ve had no messages coming through there “improperly”.

In File | Options | Email | Read (tab) is the “Automatically download message when viewing….” checked or clear?

What is the setting for “Returning Read Receipts” on the Receipts tab?

“Automatically download message when viewing….” is clear

“Returning Read Receipts” is set to “Notify me for each request”.

The thing I find strange Joe is that this is intermittent ; one or two e-mailsseem to ‘slip through’ whilst others in the same batch don’t.

Incidentally, I have tried not using Mailwasherbefore ; the same anomaly happens. When working in Outlook Express I never had this problem ; set it to “Don’t automatically download” and it did as it was told ! That’s why I’m sure Mailwasher is not an issue but rather a red herring. All Mailwaher does is allows me to view the first few lines of an e-mail and decide whether to accept or reject it. It also alerts me to potential spam but its’ only link with WLM is that, when I click on “Wash Mail” it deletes any I’ve so marked (presumably it sends a message to the Server to with-hold – I’m no techie so I don’t quite know the process) and then opens WLM for me ; I still have to tell WLM to download e-mails. It should NOT be doing it autonatically.

I expect there’s one setting I’ve not got right but I don’t know which !!

Check the “Send” tab and make that “Send messages immediately” is clear.

BTW, are you running WLM Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3538.0513)?
