I just upgraded to Windows Live Mail on 1 laptop from Outlook Express 6 on another laptop.
To my horror, WML opened with this QuickView single inbox with 154,000 messages in it, AND, 1 inbox for each of my 9 email accounts.
The Quickview inbox takes forever to load, to the point where you wonder if it is ever going to load at all. If I delete anything out of it, it deletes out of the other inboxes or other folders I put it in, so I can’t get it down to a reasonable size like around 5,000 messages. I have about 75 folders I use frequently, either using Message Rules to auto-sort incoming messages to those folders or by manually dragging messages from the inbox and putting in a folder I decide on.
I keep all my folders at 5,000 or fewer messages. If they go over that, I break them and move the extras to a folder labeled with the same name and a from-to date range.
I used OE to store research I do for my work and to store parts of web pages. I do this by simply pasting what I want or typing what I want into an email message and then telling it to move to or copy to the folder I want it in. No need to send it to myself.
I use the second tab of an email I have pasted to in order to remove any weird code I don’t want. I don’t want to just LOOK at it through “properties” of an email, I want to DO something with it using the “Source” tab of the unfinished email.
1. How can I get rid of QuickView and its 154,000-message folders. I already know I can hide it but I don’t want it to even exist — I am afraid anything that huge is going to corrupt and cause me to lose emails. It will continue to grow forever as new mail comes in or is created by me.
2. Is there a backup program that will back up only NEW messages that I get or create each day so that if that humungous giant inbox corrupts, I won’t lose my work (which will cost me everything I earn and put me to zero earnings).
3. How do I get a single Inbox for all 9 email accounts.
4. I don’t want that single inbox to have copies of every single email in Windows Live Mail (all 154,000 of them). Will it? Or if it does, what do I do about that?
5. How do I get that list of 9 email accounts out of the folder view on the left side of the page? It takes me WAY too long to scroll up and down through them to get to my constantly used “storage” folders at the bottom.
My work as a writer absolutely DEPENDS on my being able to use my email program in the ways described. I put incoming emails on a topic in the same folder with background information I have found on the internet or typed in myself. I move emails around by dragging all day long. I do not have time to save things to some folder structure on the hard disk that I create that is outside of the email program.
5. I am going to try moving my 75 “local” folders from my OE import which landed in the Storage Folders category into 1 of my email addresses, and I haven’t found out if I can do that yet.
Please, can someone help me with the above????
PS I hate Thunderbird – my neighbor has it. I also hate Apple Mail if that matters, or anything that resembles it – which this Windows Live seems to do.
