When renaming a batch of jpg files, windows does not use zero fill (001, 002, 003). So after you carefully set the display order of a photo album and then rename the files to have the file names renumbered, Windows (at least XP and Vista) displays the files in the incorrect order. It numbers the second file (1) and the third file (2) but uses no number for the first. When you close and reopen that folder, the first file now becomes the last and the second, the first. Even worse, when you try to use an SD card to show the files on an HDTV TV or other consumer electronic, it usually shows the first ten pictures as the last ten and does other strange numbering tricks. The one thing you cannot do is show the files in the alphabetical or numeric order. Does anybody know of a program or utility that can number files so they can actually be accessed in that order?

I used to use xnview for this. It’s Freeware. I don’t have the latest version but I imagine the functionality hasn’t changed. You basically set a renaming template including how many digits you want and it will add the leading zeros up to the number you specify. (http://www.xnview.com/) One thing you need to watch, unless they’ve changed it, is you have to include the file extension in the template or it will leave it off.

Also Faststone Image Viewer has a nice rename feature, but a simple workaround I use all the time on XP is just start with 100 instead of 001, or 10 if under 90 photos.

Thank you both. I tried both of the programs and their batch file naming routines are exceptional. They let you see exactly what will happen before you do it and give the opportunity to use zero fill for hundreds and even thousands of files. I’ve still to determine if their naming routines will result in slide shows in the same order as created.
