My laptop is set for a resolution of 1680 x 1050. I have a monitor which I connect to via a docking station, and it’s a wider screen format than my widescreen laptop. The resolution on the monitor is 1920 x 1080.

The laptop seems to support that just fine with one exception. The Windows 7 snap-to feature that lets you move a window to the right or left edge of the screen and have it pop into a half-screen mode only works on the left edge of the screen. My cursor doesn’t stop at the right edge of the screen like it does on the left … it just drags the window all the way off the right edge of the monitor. And some icons that I have placed near the right edge of the screen on the laptop seem to be missing … as though they’ve been placed somewhere off the right edge of my visible screen on the external monitor.

Is there any way to correct this?

Hello… try to “clone” the laptop to your monitor and use the same resolution 1680×1050. On my OS i have Nvidia control panel to setup “dual display” and if i set the large TV monitor to it’s native resolution that’s what happens to me also.:cheers: Regards Fred

Can’t you change the screen resolution as follows:

29661-ScreenResolution

Right Click desktop, Personalize, Display, Screen Resolution????

Thanks for the suggestions. Changing the resolution to match the laptop’s native resolution changes slightly the aspect ratio of things like icons and images. The height/width ratio of the monitor is apparently different from the laptop screen. Nevertheless, the resulting aspect ratio doesn’t seem really unacceptable.

However, it doesn’t solve the issue I’m asking about. I still cannot dock a window to the right edge of the screen like I can on the left edge. Draging a window to the right edge, I find I can continue to drag until the whole window disappears off the edge of the screen. (I haven’t actually gone quite that far for fear of not being able to get the window back on the visible screen, but I’ve gon so far that only a small sliver of the window remains visible.

Give this a try it works on my dual monitor desktop.

To move window from one screen to another Shift+Win+[Right/Left Arrow].
To dock the window on the current screen Win+[Right/Left Arrow].

Thanks, RetiredGeek. I’m not using dual monitors, though. I have the laptop closed in a docking station so I can use a wireless keyboard and separate monitor. Moving a window from one screen to another isn’t something I need to do. I’m trying to use the new Windows feature of dragging a window to either left or right edge of the screen and it pops into a 1/2-screen view … so I can easilyt get two windows up side by side filling the screen. That feature only works on the left edge with my external monitor.

Have you set your laptop to turn off the laptop screen?
Most laptops will allow this via function keys on my Dell it’s FN + F1 YMMV.

Thanks! On my ThinkPad, it’s Fn + F7. However, it hasn’t changed the behavior at all. (Nice suggestion, though!)

Try this:
navigate to: control panel > display > change display settings
check to see if “Multiple Displays” is set to “Show desktop only on 1” – if not, set it to that.
That should do it.
