• Windows settings and re-install

I am unable to maintain the desktop settings I have selected ( classic with large font). Selection of these items works, but is unstable.
On booting up, the large font appears, but not the classic interface. After a few seconds, the “please wait ” message appears, the hard drive grinds, and the font size reverts to the default.
Could the problem lie in the drive?
Like many others, I have had problems with the CD-RW recognition, and would like to follow the advice of a fresh install of XP. Can XP be re-installed over an existing installation, or must the hard drive be reformatted and a fresh install performed?
    Many thanks
    Dianne

There is a Repair function when reinstalling Windows XP, I would follow this method. I have see to many systemed messed up because of installing over the top, including setting up a dual boot on the same partition.

So either do the repair or a clean install after a format. But make sure that you have backed up ALL of your data, and have ALL of you software masters to reinstall them.

Thank you your wise advice re installation of XP.
Any idea why I cannot get the computer to retain the desktop settings for more than a few seconds after booting up? The classic interface returns to the XP default, and the large font similarly reverts to default size. Not a major problem, but annoying as the chosen settings are easier on the ageing eyes!

The desktop settings go with the user name. Have you changed your logon user name?

No change in user name since I installed XP.
The strange thing is that the settings remain as chosen for a few moments after boot up, then reset spontaneously after the “please wait” message. All other functions are stable and working well.

You stated “the large font appears” this normally happens ONLY in the “safe mode”. Make sure that you are NOT starting up in the safe mode befor making these changes.

Thank you for persisting with my problem!
Am starting up in normal mode.
The font size has been deliberately selected by right click of desktop–> properties–> appearances.–> font size. Same process used in selection of Windows Classic. The chosen settings are present when I boot up for the next session. Retained for the first 15 seconds or so , then both revert, to Windows Classic(modified) and normal font size. The usual “saving your settings” message appears on shut-down.
The desktop settings are the only unstable ones. All other Windows settings remain as selected.
              Certainly a mystery!
