While his advice on patching non-Microsoft programs is sound, I think he needs to visit this site to get a clearer picture of Microsoft’s “good job”.

There is an update link and information at Adobe’s site. See the following link http://helpx.adobe.com/security/products/reader/apsb14-28.html

Actually, there is an Adobe Reader 11.0.10 update. You can get it here:

GuestJanuary 8, 2015 at 8:45 am #52061I want to thank both for responding about Adobe Reader updates. However, my try to d/l and install a suitable 11.0.10 version did not complete. The d/l’d Adobe file had a file extension of .msp, so Microsoft said it could not install it. I did not try to d/l the Adobe version Multilingual since I could not find that I had an earlier version of that type file installed with an earlier edition number.
I have gone to Adobe updates several times, but it keeps saying there are no updates beyond the 11.0.8 version I have. -

Are you using WinXP?
Adobe apparently has dropped support for its Reader on WinXP beyond v11.0.08.
See *System Requirement Changes* at this link. (The link says the information is for its Enterprise Toolkit–but, I suspect it effects regular users as well)
http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/ReleaseNotes/index.html
It was hard to find any information on this on the web.

GuestMay 9, 2015 at 7:43 am #52067Please understand that too much of what is presented here is jargon to many of us. How about adding explainations to some of your statements.
I added Spybot Search & Destroy to my Windows 7 It wiped out a few hundred items; made my computer a lot faster. But it also wiped out Adobe Acrobat. Why did you in your book not mention that Spy Bot could also cause problems.

Oy, I know that the blog’s become jargon-filled. That’s why I try to stick with the very simple MS-DEFCON numbering system, but it doesn’t always match the reality. Sorry about that!
I haven’t recommended Spybot S&D for a decade or more. I recommend against registry scanners. Strongly. In my Windows 8.1 book, look on page 978. Registry scanners are top on my list for “You don’t need ’em or want ’em,” starting with Windows 7.
But if it took out Acrobat, you should thank them! Acrobat’s the second or third larges source of Windows infections in recent years – the first, by some reckoning.
