A few days ago, I downloaded some patches from the Windows Download site. Since then, every time I connect (I’m dial-up), my computer starts automatically downloading stuff without my knowledge or consent. It takes forever…

How do I stop these automatic download and revert back to the manual mode where I can choose what and when I want to get fixes.

These options are dimmed on both my W2K (SP4) workstation and WinXP (SP1) notebook, logged on as an account with Admin rights–have I downloaded a “critical update” that takes away this choice?

      Hi Claude–

This sounds much like the problem in this KB:

318892: WINUP: Search for Updates Loops (Repeats) and Windows Update Fails

What OS and what IE version if you’re using IE? Knowing that would help. Many features and fixes are OS and IE specific, and searches in the KB are best done by knowing the OS version in the pulldown. if you’re using Win XP Pro or Win 2K and have the MMC and GPE, I’d look there.

Also you may find help with the MSKB’s many articles on Windows Update, and here’s a link to the

      Windows Update Troubleshooter

Further support links for Windows Update as well as an alternative not plagued with WinUPs many current glitches, the Microsoft Security Site for Hotfixes are in:

See Post 294875 and Post 288653

Also if you’re determined to use Windows Update, you might explore using the Corporate site with the links in:
