I receive Windows Updates that Ms. Bradley never mentions. On 8/13 I received these two updates: KB2862966 and KB2863058. I can find no reference to these updates in Ms. Bradley’s most recent column. Maybe I don’t understand how to look for updates, but this continually happens – I receive one or two updates she does not discuss. What I have done in the past is wait 3 or more months and then install them. I have Win7, 64-bit. Can anyone provide me some guidance?

Also, in Ms. Bradley’s 7/23 Patch Watch, she discusses Service Pack 2 for Office 2010, and advises us to wait a couple weeks. I have followed her advice, but it’s now 3 plus weeks since the update was offered, and no further guidance. Any suggestions on what to do?

      Sue,

FWIW: I’ve had the Office 2010 SP-2 patch installed since it was available w/o problem.

X2, no problems here as well.

      You do, and it does.

I have the same problems/confusion as suenewby regarding XP updates from Ms. Bradley, and I do not understand your response. Could you expand on it?

And is there any way to search for a specific update KB number on Windows Secrets?

Thanks in advance for the clarification,

        Harry

Sorry to have been so obtuse. I was trying to be sympathetic with suenewby, who probably wasn’t doing anything wrong.

I meant that she probably did understand how to search for updates, but it does continually happen that some are not discussed.

You can search the newsletter archives (top right) for the KB number (without the KB, as Susan Bradley inserts a space).

Or go to the master Patch Watch chart page and search using Ctrl+F (again; number only, no KB)

But perhaps the most important thing to realize is that in general Susan Bradley only talks about security patches, not mere bug fixes or new features.

          Hope this helps,

          Bruce

Bruce: GREAT suggestions! I found the Ctrl+F feature works on the other Windows Secrets pages as well.

I realize that Ms. Bradley addresses security patches only. CTRL+F got to me some old ones that I could not find otherwise.

Ctrl + F brings up a browser search box that search the current web page. Works on any web page with IE, Firefox, and Chrome.

I have Opera 12,and it works there also.

To Bruce R again. I just went through about 40 pending updates on my XP and Win 7 computers: using first, the Search on Newsletter Archives, and 2nd, the Ctrl+F on whatever page I chose from the Archive search. It worked just great, and very quick. I have only subscribed to Windows Secrets for a couple of years, but if this two-step approach to find updates has never been covered in an article in the newsletter, it should. What a time and aggravation saver!

        Thanks again for the tip,

        Harry

An update is available that improves management of weak certificate cryptographic algorithms in Windows:
      http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;2862966
I thought I wrote about this one, I’ll have to double check.

August 2013 cumulative time zone update for Windows operating systems:
      http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;2863058
I know I wrote about time zone updates recently. Unless you have a direct impact with the country being updated you don’t need it.

As far as SP2, be aware there is still an issue http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/c2be5b32-0f1d-4a0f-9f93-da7e7d67be19/calendar-folder-property-is-missing?forum=outlook that causes your event log to be filled up. Tracking a resolution for December for that one.

I try to cover as much as I can, but with Microsoft shoving it’s operating system out the door in pieces, and they don’t document ANYWHERE exactly what is expected to be seen on a machine, I have to rely on my own machines to see what’s being offered to everyone. So apologies if a few slip through the cracks.

Also keep in mind that one particular patch might have numerous different KB numbers, depending on the software version number and your operating system. This is particularly true for .NET updates. There is simply not room on the Patch Watch chart to list all these variations. Instead you’ll see something similar to: “.NET; see MS13-082 for complete list.” Click the link to see all related patch numbers. And yes, we emphasize security patches. The many, many fixits are often mentioned but not placed on the charts.

Sorry to hijack/add to confusion but I’ve been having similar problems with updates being offered but not mentioned in (the excellent and very reliable) Patchwatch. Currently (November updates) I have W7 Security updates KB2862152 and 2868725 and also an optional update 2830447 which I can’t find in either current Patchwatch or archive. In the past I have waited a couple of months before going ahead and installing (so far with no ill effects) but I don’t like doing it – can anyone shed any light please?

I got these three also and was wondering the same thing.

Same with me. 2862152 relating to Direct Access and 2868725 relating to disabling RC4 (do not know what either are) showed up as security updates on my W7 pc and ….152 on both my XP pcs. The release date for both is 11/12/13. I did do a search in both the Patch Watch bulletin and on this forum. Any info. on these would be appreciated.

complain, complain, complain; sometimes that is all I do. it looks like me and suenewbe are the only lost souls on this planet. Patch Watch is great, folks trust it; but boy is it hard for me to use. did U ever look for a MS patch *in W8 by the kb# in order to see if you installed it?? Don’t ! It will drive you cra-zee. MS release dates don’t help me much either; I often install a ms-update after its release date. I have even installed 1 or 2 updates before the release date. May be the problem is I don’t get MS Security Bulletins emails. MS sorts it Bulletins chronologically, and each bulletin explains the update by kb#.
There must be a way to sort this valuable data but I am missing it….
