Title: Windows Update error 8024402C caused by April Rollup

Applies to: Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008

The April Rollups (Security Only or Full) break Windows Update such that Windows Update fails with error code 8024402C when trying to install additional updates.

Furthermore, the April Rollups hang when uninstalling. The only solution is to wait 5 minutes, then either manually reboot your computer or kill power to your Windows Computer. Upon reboot, choose to start Windows Normally. Windows will then reinstall several Registry/Machine entries, then finish uninstalling the April Rollup, then Windows will reboot your computer again after configuring your computer to complete the removal of the badly botched April Rollup. Finally, after all of this, the April Rollup will be fully uninstalled, Windows will boot normally, and Windows Update will once again work correctly.

This is for the April Monthly Rollup, yes?

Not sure where you can find that update anymore…

Yes, for the April Monthly Rollup. The April Monthly Rollups are still available on the Microsoft Update Catalog and were not superseded by the May Monthly Rollups. I also forgot to mention that, after installing the April Security Only Rollup KB4015546, I could not download the May Rollup from the Microsoft Update Catalog until I told Firefox to restore its default connection settings. KB4015549 (Group A) and KB4015546 (Group B) are horribly botched. This is what we frequently get ever since Nadella fired Microsoft’s update quality assurance team.

On another note, I read a forum member’s comment under the “Patch Tuesday is rolling out” topic that his WSUS server is not synchronizing. His comment:

“I’m noticing on my WSUS server that all of the Win server 2016 patches are missing for May.  Meaning that any patch for any product targeted for Win 2016 was not synchronized.  Such as the OS patch, .NET, etc. I’ve rechecked all of the long-standing settings and they are as they should be.

      Is anyone else seeing this?”

The above anonymous user’s comment makes me wonder if he had the April Rollup installed, and if the April rollup is breaking WSUS server synchronization.

      Interesting,

Being a group B plan member, I overlooked installing April Security only update kb4015546-x64. I just downloaded it from MS catalog, while I was grabbing the May update, so maybe I’ll just skip April all together.

On another note regarding MS Office update for MS Office 2010, either Security Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2589382)  or (KB3178688) broke Excel. It started doing some very odd things when pasting from clipboard. After uninstalling them, all was well. Those will remain hidden.
