Having removed WSUS from our Windows Server 2003 as being (considerably) more trouble than it was worth for my 20 PCs, I am getting problems with Windows Updates, where it will not obtain updates automatically, but only ‘manually’ using IE’s Windows/Microsoft Update selection.

I have set Automatic Updates to “Turn Off Automatic Updates”
and then set it to “Download updates but let me choose when to install them” (which is what I have been trying to get to work for some time!
The following portion of the WindowsUpdate.log relates to this (second) alteration (with the date and time removed for space saving – there is a 1 second difference between first and last message).

Every 15-30 minutes prior to this (and presumably subsequently, were I to give this enough time!), there is a short burst of messages:

    1536 1abc PT Initializing simple targeting cookie, clientId=a5c8cff3-fa7b-4c6a-9d49-085b546f0b53, target group= , DNS name=

1536 1abc Report WARNING: Reporter failed to upload events with hr = 80244019.

I suspect this is a long shot, but does anyone have any clues what to do? I’ve hunted via Google, and not really got anywhere, except that the 404 error indicates a missing web page ‘somewhere’, probably in IIS…

    Thanks!

If I’m reading this correctly it appears that the Windows Server 2003 machine is still looking for the WSUS site. Have you run gpedit.msc and looked in Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Update to make sure the Intranet location is not configured now?

No, largely because I didn’t know I had to! I shall look tomorrow…

        Thanks in advance!

Yes, as you surmised, that option was set, and I have now unset it. I will monitor the WindowsUpdate.log file to see if anything else untoward occurs.

        Thanks again!

          John,

Here’s hoping it was just that easy. grin Glad to be of assistance.
