Having removed WSUS from our Windows Server 2003 as being (considerably) more trouble than it was worth for my 20 PCs, I am getting problems with Windows Updates, where it will not obtain updates automatically, but only ‘manually’ using IE’s Windows/Microsoft Update selection.
I have set Automatic Updates to “Turn Off Automatic Updates”
and then set it to “Download updates but let me choose when to install them” (which is what I have been trying to get to work for some time!
The following portion of the WindowsUpdate.log relates to this (second) alteration (with the date and time removed for space saving – there is a 1 second difference between first and last message).

Every 15-30 minutes prior to this (and presumably subsequently, were I to give this enough time!), there is a short burst of messages:
1536 1abc PT Initializing simple targeting cookie, clientId=a5c8cff3-fa7b-4c6a-9d49-085b546f0b53, target group= , DNS name= 1536 1abc PT Server URL = http://FILESERVER01/SimpleAuthWebService/SimpleAuth.asmx 1536 1abc PT WARNING: GetAuthorizationCookie failure, error=0x80244019, soap client error=10, soap error code=0, HTTP status code=404 1536 1abc Report WARNING: Reporter failed to upload events with hr = 80244019.
I suspect this is a long shot, but does anyone have any clues what to do? I’ve hunted via Google, and not really got anywhere, except that the 404 error indicates a missing web page ‘somewhere’, probably in IIS…
Thanks!
