Well, I had problem with a windows error reporting event called wpcotherfailure3, and according to my research this was caused by a bug in one of the 2018 patches.(jan – feb)
So I decided to install the march patch
So to make sure I dont have issues with the windows update I stopped the Windows update service the BITS service and the Update orchestrator one. and I deleted the folder.
then Inmediatly I started the services again and after they were up, I inmediatly pushed the button of searching for updates, I realized late that I had to block certain updates so I did it while it was searching for updates and well the march update appeared.
After a while I noticed that the march update didnt want to install with the error 0x80240009 (I tried 4 times installing this update)
I ran the troubleshooter and it said I required a Restart and well after a while it rebooted but noticed that the reboot was quick. and when I checked my update history it said IT tried to install the 1709 update.
which was weird since I have it blocked with Wushowhide.
in the end I manually installed the update and thankfully everything went fine for me, at least for now.
Which makes me think the following theory:
when I deleted the softwaredistribution folder my blocked updates were unblocked and when I ran Windows Update, it tried to download and install the 1709 patch which gave that error which only appears when WU install something and you try to install something else.
Well with all of this background, I want to ask the following:
I never use Windows defender (I use Avast) so, to make sure Windows Update is Okay, I installed the definition updates of Windows defender , they were downloaded and sucessfully installed without an issue.
So the questions are:
Do you think my theory is right?
If Windows Update were corrupt and didnt work, Updates would fail in windows defender right?
