Windows Update Reset Tool for Win7

I have a Lenovo laptop that I tried to upgrade to Win10 three times last year. An obscure hardware incompatibility blocked it. Now I would like to just reset the components of Windows Update, so that I can receive the monthly rollups for Win7.

I thought this comprehensive script tool for resetting Windows Update would do the trick:

Here is a snapshot of the menu from that script:

I went thru all the steps up to #11, rebooted, and then tried running the reset Windows Update.
Now it just ‘Checks for Updates’ forever.

Who has a suggestion for kickstarting Windows Update after this reset?

I followed the steps in https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-update/windows-7-update-solution/f39a65fa-9d10-42e7-9bc0-7f5096b36d0c?auth=1

The first standalone update, KB3172605, said it was “not appropriate”.

The second standalone update, KB3172605 (Servicing Stack Update), seemed to have gotten stuck searching for updates, even though I had set the WU Settings to “Never check for updates”. The WUSA.exe got stuck searching:

But a little more unchecking of WU Settings, followed by a reboot, seemed to do the trick.

Finally the third standalone update, KB3020369, the big Rollup went on too – after 2 two long reboots.

Now it looks like my Win7 Windows Update is back in business.
