Windows Update Trouble

One of the laptops in our office is having trouble downloading Windows Updates. At startup each day that machine (Dell Laptop, Win 98 SE; IE 6.x) gets the Update notification, and after I follow the link to the Update site, it starts to find updates, but seems to get stuck at about 30%. After many hours it will remain on 30 %, and does not go farther. Tthis has been happening every day. Other machines in our office have no problems finding and downloading Windows Updates.

Any suggestions?

When is the last time you cleaned your disk, you may be running out of space.

My Compaq notebook at work does exactly the same thing. One of the other lounge boards I follow said it was a problem at Microsoft, with their site (this from MS tech supp). In any event, it seems to work off and on now, and supposedly isn’t a problem with your machine.

I’ve cleaned up the disk, there’s plenty of space there, so I don’t think that is the problem.
Also tried the Windows Update Troubleshooting ( http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ ) suggestions for this problem (“Scan for Updates freezes or stops at 0%”), to no avail.

I finally found a solution that worked for me, by reinstalling the proper version of the JScript Security Patch for Windows with instructions from a post on this site:

To fix this, reinstall the proper version of the JScript Security Patch for Windows.

[Note: this is MUCH quicker/easier than re-installing Internet Explorer entirely. Also note, these steps are for Win98, so they may vary for others with XP/2000/ME/NT4, etc.]

1. Search/Find your file “jscript.dll” (C:WINDOWSSYSTEM folder)
2. Right-click on it, choose Properties, then Version tab to determine which version of Jscript you are running

4. Click on the appropriate link for your OS.

On the next page:
NOTE: For versions look in the “Related Resources” box.
Choose the patch for the version of jscript that you are running. (i.e., for jscript.dll 5.5xxx you need the 5.5 update, etc.)
Download it to Desktop (or other location as desired)
Reboot.
Double click on patch, follow prompts and reboot.
