For the past month or so, the Windows  10 Updates, that are supposed to be automatic, will take place, and then I get a message saying that “The update failed.”  I have generally ignored the problem, and the update will eventually occur as desired.

Recently, key updates simply would not occur, and I started getting nasty messages saying that my version of Windows would no longer be supported if I did not update.  I ran the Troubleshooter, and after perhaps an hour of activity, the update occurred sucessfully.

Do any of you know why my updates might have been failing, and why the Troubleshooter might have been successfully in repairing things.  I am reasonably computer-literate (after all, I have the good sense to be a member here), but I want to know what the heck is happening.

The vagaries of Windows Update not updating are many and varied – even MS can’t give us a fix that actually fixes issues.

Happily, Susan has shown that a simple install over the top, keeping programs and data, fixes most bad behaviour.

What is the best way to do a “simple install over the top”?

It seems something is happening. Same issue here. Will watch this thread for
a few days before pursuing this further.
