Windows wants to keep updating same files

Got trouble with Windows Update on my XP machine. (Sp3 all updates up to now no problem). Microsoft .net framework has a 3 part security update. Seems to install okay … very slow. Update report says updated. Review of update history gives a green checkmark .. updates okay. However, I keep getting the message that I need to update. Windows update does not seem to be able to recognize that the job has been done.

Ran Fixit. Didn’t help.

How do I get out of this loop?

Microsoft has a big problem producing .NET patches have reliable detection and installation mechanisms. You could try repairing your .NET installation. If that fails you can uninstall and reinstall the various .NET versions.

If that is too much work and the patches installed correctly you can just hide the patches.

Maybe my mind needs a long nights rest … but I don’t see any repair options for the .NET installation.

What other operations are dependent on the .NET software?

As far as I can tell all patches have installed correctly … update just doesn’t seem to be able to figure that out. … How do you hide the patches?

Hi Alstewart. I and many others have had the same problem – some updates offering themselves over and over for installation.
In the end I solved the problem by downloading the exe files individually from the MS update site and running those one at a time.
You can find the exe for each update at the MS site, eg. for KB 2518864, KB 2572073, KB2633880 :

You can download them, but they won’t be installed because Windows File Protection prevents newer files from being overwritten by older versions. You can prove this for yourself by doing a search for Mscordacwks.dll which is one of the files mentioned in your first link. To check the version, right click the file, go to “Properties” and then click the “Version” tab. You’ll see that the version you have installed is 2.0.50727.3634

Now go to your link and compare that with the version you downloaded and you’ll see that it’s 2.0.50727.3623

Until Microsoft releases a patch to correct the issue on their site and via Automatic Updates, you can use the workaround to disable delivery

Hopefully, we won’t have to wait until the next Patch Tuesday before that happens.

Guys, rather than starting a new thread everytime, take the time to check the existing ones for this particular problem.

You can save yourselves a lot of time and trouble by implementing existing workarounds until Microsoft releases a patch.

Sorry about starting the new thread. I guess I was in just too much of a hurry to get something up there asking for help.

And thanks for the help. So far so good … I’ve managed to stop the annoying reminder.

Hope MS corrects the problem soon.

It did the same thing to me yesterday, and I found that turning off the machine and letting it sit for a couple of minutes solved it!

I think that works for awhile … but later it might return because the bug is still there in MS. I’ve stopped (I think/I hope) the automatic updates. Time will tell what works. Hopefully MS gets their act together on this.

My issue is not with the files listed here, but with KB2686828 and KB2656369 which are already installed ; However, on subsequent reboots, these files are listed as needing to be downloaded and installed as indicated by the yellow icon in the task bar. I checked these files and they have zero bits unlike those already installed. Tried “fixit” with no success as they always appear on system boots. Any assistance is appreciated.

There were three .NET updates released in May 2012 (specifically NDP1.1sp1-KB2656370-X86.exe, NDP20SP2-KB2656369-x86.exe, and NDP40-KB2656368-x86.exe) that would appear on Microsoft Updates or Automatic updates, whether or not they had actually been installed successfully. Microsoft subsequently removed them from Microsoft Updates/Automatic Updates to temporarily solve this problem.

Now, in June 2012, these updates have been modified (to v2: version 2). Even if these updates had been successfully installed (at version 1), it is a good idea to install these v2 updates to avoid nag messages from Microsoft Updates and/or Automatic Updates. These newer installers fix the endless-loop problem.

This should now be the last time these updates are offered.

New updates installed yesterday … also new installer software. So we shall see.
