    Hi,
I work remotely for a company that uses Windows XP since programs do not run on newer system. The company pays MS for support so it is patch to October 2018 patch for Windows Xp. My current problem is that after install the October 2018 patch. My password was expiring and need to change it. Over the last 5 years that I had this Windows Xp laptop, I never had problem with changing password over VPN until now. I changed it over the VPN connection but it seems the local password remembered is the old password. The domain password was changed. Afer VPN connection, it asked for new password. I lock computer and use new password and it does not work. I need to use old password. I called the help support but they could not figure it out and told me to come into the office. This means a 3 hours drive to the local office, 2 min to connect to wired connection, and than 3 hours drive back.

I already tried to clear credentials, changing password again (but does not work with new or old password), removing temporary files, using command line to force policy update, ….

Is there an option that would fix this without having to drive to local office for a 2 min connection to wired connection?

      ? says:

maybe uninstall the offending patch, update the password and then re-install the patch? i get good info on XP at MSFN, they may know just the right fix…

Remote credentials are cached, then updated next time you connect to the domain. Seems your credentials are not being synced.
Check the Event Viewer for system or security events relating to the domain connection. Might give you some clues.

      cheers, Pau

I tried that already as well. Not help. I have got info from here. If not, than i might have to try MSFN but I do not have an account there.

There does not seem to be any events for it. IT checked those as well. This is the reason they suggest coming to local office, which is not local for me.

Perhaps a Windows XP virtual machine is in order here. If you have Windows 7 as your primary OS, you could install XP Mode, a free virtual machine program from Microsoft which includes a free copy of XP. Run the must-have software in XP Mode, while logging in via VPN from your Windows 7 machine. That is the most likely way to get this to work. Or with any version of Windows (7, 8.1, or 10) as your primary OS, you can use Oracle VirtualBox or VMWare Workstation to install XP and then run your must-have software in XP.

If there are several of you who use this must-have software, then perhaps your company could create a remote XP session on Citrix. You would install Citrix Receiver on your Windows 7/8.1/10 laptop, and then log into a remote XP Citrix session and run the must-have software remotely via Citrix. Citrix is how we did it at my last job.

      Group "L" (Linux Mint)
with Windows 10 running in a remote session on my file server
