I have 2 areas I notice this problem – but suspect it’s one cause. My boss is having a problem with settings not being retained after a reboot. Several we have noticed are:
Adds/deletes to the quick launch bar
Changes to an Outlook profile (2003 sp2)
    Creating a new Outlook profile
Move of files to a different position on the desktop
All changes work fine until he reboots. I have all the same software and am not having any problem. The only change we’ve made in our systems is the installation of pointsec encryption software. I checked ‘known issues’ with the excryption sofware and there’s nothing relating to it impacting saving settings, so at this point I don’t know if it has anything to do with it or not. Any ideas?
All these items work fine until

I have had Windows have a Grey Goose moment as you describe (cannot remember). If you run some basic maintenance it usually clears up. My suggestions are: 1) empty the personal profile temp folder, it is hidden and is a garbage dump. 2) run chkdsk, you may have to do this more than once 3) run SFC/scannow (system file checker) 4) download and run memtest, it is free and it cannot hurt. After performing these items and several cold boots my problems dissappeared.

      Good luck.

Nice t hought – but I should have mentioned that my boss is very good about keeping his machine clean and runs regular maintenance. He started in deskto support so is very conscience of it.
