I received an email about the release of WinZip 12.0 and since I use it every day in some way or other, I guess I’ll continue my investment with them. The upgrade price isn’t bad, but I don’t see anything I need in the higher priced Pro version that I don’t already have in some other way.

Abandoned WinZip back when it was free and then became Shareware. Did my research and a plethora of reading and trials and decided on WinRAR. What I liked most about WinRAR was the ability to create .zip OR .rar files as well as self-extracting files. And, the bonus is that after you purchase WinRAR for a very modest price, ALL future updates are free … that’s right… free. Can’t beat that with a stick!

I have been using the “Built in” ones that comes with XP and Vista and they work just fine.

      Thanks Al,

I suddenly feel really out of date when I saw vresion 12 nuts A useful utility but I don’t think I have seen it on a PC since it was introduced in XP

I’ve been meaning to check on this, but you and Dave reminded me. Way, way back when I went from Win98 to XP, it seems to me I remember learning that there was something left out of the MS XP implementation that I needed and I don’t remember any more than that. Do you know of something that can’t be done natively in XP? For example, can we create a new, self-extracting zip in XP? I can only remember that I stopped using WinZip and for some reason, re-started and have been there all this time.

          I don’t know about Vista.
The zip implementation built into Windows XP is fine for most users, since you can drag and drop files, and even create a password-protected zip file, but it has some limitations:
          – It becomes extremely slow if you try to zip or unzip many large files – hundreds of times slower than WinZip and other third-party utilities.
          – You can’t create self-extracting archives.

As Hans says about the self-extracting Zip, that is one thing that can be useful at times and so WinZip (as do other software house versions) win over. I suppose it comes down to what you need.

At work, if a file or set of files is too large for emailing, I tend to zip my files, password protect them and then place them on a share to be picked up by the user

Thanks to you and Hans for replying. I can’t remember if it was speed or capabilities or what. And NOW, what with having WinZip as well as other “OS modifying” software on my system, I don’t know if the following is native XP behavior or not. The attached screenshot (combo of two clips) shows that I just now selected a group of files in Windows Explorer. Upon right-clicking, I get a context menu that looks like the left side of the screenshot. Note the icons showing WinZip with its usual icon and the other four just above which I don’t know if they’re native XP or not. So, I chose Add To Archive and a window like the right side opens up. Now I know this isn’t a WinZip menu, but is it native XP? Note that it DOES have a selection for self-extracting (SFX), so I tested it on my group of files and it works. But once again, is that built-in to XP or has it been added to my system by some software that I’ve added? Consequently, I’m usually a bit reluctant to suggest “archive” kinds of stuff to Loungers because I don’t know what they have or what they might not be able to do.

It’s not the native Windows XP feature. It looks like you have WinRAR archiver installed (the icon is the one for WinRAR)

Absolutely correct, Mon Ami, as always! blush

Added: According to Revo Uninstaller, I added WinRar in July 2006, which I received as a freebie for participating in some kind of survey, which I also don’t remember, but my email file has the serial number in a message back then!

Yep, that’s WinRAR alrighty!! And, by clicking on the “Add to archive” it opens the main WinRAR window where you can choose to create either a “.rar” file OR a “.zip” file under “Archive format”…. or a self-extracting file. That’s one of the great things I like about WinRAR.

BTW…. current version for WinRAR is 3.80. wink
