Hi all. I am going to be networking two computers in my home shortly with a wireless router (the router itself is on back order and will be in any day now). I’m fairly confident I can figure out how to put all the pieces together, but my biggest concern is security. Before I make this leap into the world of wireless, can anyone explain to me in layman’s terms what I need to do/have to protect the computers from external nasties? I have read a few articles about this but am not coming away any the wiser for having read them. I have been told to check my “security protocols” once the router is installed. Does this refer to a firewall or is there something else I need to know ? Thanks in advance for any education you can provide!

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerMarch 20, 2005 at 4:15 pm #936031Are you buying a “wireless firewall router”, and if so, which make and model?
Do both computers have a wireless card in them, or are you going to have one ethernet connection to the router?
Have you got a software firewall and antivirus software installed in each computer?
John
PS Do you wish you hadn’t asked your original question

AskWoody LoungerMarch 20, 2005 at 5:52 pm #936039Oh yuck. I can answer some of the questions but as I don’t have the router yet, and can’t remember all the specifics about it, all I can say is that it is a D-link…sorry. It was a really, really good price so I hope I haven’t ordered a chees-y model! I will be connecting one computer via an ethernet connection and the other with a wireless card (which I have but haven’t installed yet). I have a firewall and antivirus software in one computer and as soon as the other is “live” to the internet, I will be adding those items as well. Am I good to go once I have installed these items on the other computer then? Or should I just wait until I have the router and post back?
