I upgraded my Suddenlink internet to a higher tier 30/2 down up.
they supplied me with a new Wireless Modem/Router the Arris DG950.
I am getting the promised speed I was just curious if there are any settings especially on the Modem/Router side that would optimize the connection.
I currently have 1 Desktop running W7HP and a Direct TV DVR hardwired to the modem and 1 Laptop running W7HP and 2 Cell Phones using WIFI.
Again no real problems it just seems that I have read that some of the default settings may not give you the best performance.
    Thanks

      Hi Barry,

if your router is configured as your ISP recommends, I would not change any setting except the DNS servers. Use this to test it.

Fascinating tool.it shows the google server to be 21% faster than the current.
just so I understand what I am doing see attached for my current settings.
      33301-lansetup
      and the recommended
      33302-config
So I would replace the Primary DNS Server IP with 8.8.4.4 and the Secondary with the 208.180.42.68?

Once you have changed your DNS servers to the recommended ones by using these instructions: https://store.opendns.com/setup/operatingsystem/windows-7 run namebench again to see if anything has changed. I bet it hasn’t. Your primary DNS server is going to be the one assigned to you by your ISP. At least that has been my experience.

Thanks to all of you for the information. Based on what was said here and additional research I did I confer that changing the DNS settings would not make any significant difference.
          Thanks for your help.

Not true. The primary DNS server is the one you have set in the properties of your network card. I have played around with different DNS servers and ave seen a difference in namebench results. I agree that there probably won’t be a significant change in browser performance by changing DNS servers however.

Having a slightly faster DNS won’t make any real difference. Your PC may spend 5% of it’s time looking up DNS entries so 20% faster will make your machine 1% faster when browsing. It will make no difference when downloading files / data.
Using a different DNS may be of value if you want to restrict access to certain dodgy sites – the DNS won’t respond with an IP address, which makes your browsing slower.

      cheers, Paul

Hi Barry, for IPv4, Primary is 8.8.8.8 Secondary 8.8.4.4 I wouldn’t change the IPv6 settings.

Note you do have to disconnect and reconnect to network or reboot to make the DNS change effective.

Best to do the changes in your outer if it has the option then you don’t have to change all the network adapter settings of all your computers, can leave them set to automatically find DNS.
