Okay, this week’s dumb question …

Can anyone tell me what the range of a wireless mouse should be? I’m thinking of buying a wireless mouse for a notebook, and the USB ports are at the back and on the right-hand side. I presume that it’ll work for me if the dongle is plugged into the right-hand side because I’m right-handed, but will it also work for the left-handed folks in the house who will want the mouse on the left-hand side of the notebook and with no line-of-sight connection?

The notebook is a fairly new Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP.

I can’t speak to the laptop implications, but I can tell you that I’ve had a cordless mouse for quite some time now on my desktop and for both right and left handed people (my son and me) the mouse works perfectly from quite a distance from the receiver unit. I can’t imagine that performance would be any less for a laptop. I’ve manipulated the mouse from as far away as 15 feet.

      Hi William

As usual it appears which one you buy. They state 2 feet to 30 feet but I honestly think that it is pushing it a bit whith direct line of sight and new batteries. I am assuming the latter is for when you are doing presentations. Most modern mouse pointing devices will have a sufficient range for what you want

I had three people in the same office (within 20 metres of each other) who quickly abandoned wireless keyboard and mouse. The signals were being received by the wrong receiver and creating all sorts of havoc. Some of it funny, but mostly annoying.
When I purchased the next mob of PCs for that company I told the supplier that I did not want wireless and the reason, and they said that they had found the same thing and had taken the same path ie back to using wires.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I’ll get one and give it a whirl. I’ve got only one machine so interference shouldn’t be a problem.
