Does anyone have any suggestions to get file and printer sharing to work between a Wireless XP and 98 system?

We are on a home network using the Compaq Connection point on the 98 side with a pcmcia in a laptop on the XP end.

If we connect with a regular cable sharing will work along with internet access. If we use the wireless only the internet will work.

In discussion (about 12 hours worth) with Compaq they say the two will not file and print share over the wireless because the two systems will not talk.

    !?

If we can access internet via wireless and everything via wire they are talking, no?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and if you happen to be in Eastern Washington State I’ll buy you a drink of your choice.

*SIGH!*, the tutorial didn’t explain anything new than I have already done. Any other ideas?

Man! This is more frustrating than my first marriage! I do appreciate the assistance. smile

On XP machine (laptop) there is a wireless pcmcia card from Compaq. It is the iPAQ Networking 11Mbps Wireless PC Card model #HNW100.

The 98SE machine (destop) has the Compaq iPAQ Connection Point CP-2W (it of course is wireless too).

      Hi Ian,

I am connected to the CP2W via a usb port and ethernet adapter.

I will check out the article. Thanks.

The settings are the same both times. Same IP’s, MAC address, DNS Servers everything.

I am wondering if it would be advantageous to lose XP and install 98SE onto the laptop.

Though I would have to agree with you. They just can’t hold onto each other very well in wireless mode. Kind of like some of my relationships.

98 shows the subnet mask as all zeros.

The XP machine gives me a dos screen that is gone in a blink of an eye using the command you gave me. Is there a different command for XP

      • #557726

Got it! According to winipcfg and the XP machine I have different subnet masks.

But the subnet mask on the CP2W and the XP lap top match.

Ok, I see now. I do have the same subnet masks on both machines. I have netbuei on the 98 machine, but it is not available as a protocol for xp. Or if it is, I don’t know how to get it. I was given an article from compaq about netbuei, and in it it stated that it is not available on the OEM CD.

Ok, here’s as good one for you. This wonderful Compaq did not come with an XP CD. And the restore CD’s don’t appear to have the necessary files.

Heck, if you could e-mail me Nbf.sys and Netnbf.inf that may just do the trick.

Now were getting places. It worked for a moment now I get an error message on the XP Machine that there are duplicate names on the network

I believe I am now up and running! I really, really appreciate you assistance. Much better than Compaq gave me.
