This one’s a bit interesting as I think I may know the cause. I just can’t fix it!
I bought a new laptop, so as you can imagine there was a bunch of crap installed and things I don’t need running at startup. So I went through the msconfig, the Task Manager and the Services and disabled or deleted what I didn’t need. One of those things was Windows Live ID Sign In Manager. According to all things I could google on the subject, it was for signing in, usually using Messenger – something I do not use. So I stopped the Service and disabled it. It seemed to have no effect on Windows Live Mail, which was running at the time.
After this, I deleted a few emails in WLM, which seemed to work just fine.
Later, (and I may have restarted WLM and/or my computer in the interim) I found that those emails I had deleted were back. So I hit Delete again and got an “unknown error” message.
I rebooted my computer and went to bed. This morning I tried to start WLM and it wouldn’t start at all. Got a specific error number, but googling it didn’t help.
Then I went through my list of things I had disabled and realized that maybe that Live ID thing might have something to do with it. (I don’t use WLM to sign in to Hotmail, so I didn’t think I needed any sign-in crap.) After restarting the Sign In Manager, I was able to re-start WLM. But those deleted emails are still there.
Except they are not.
If I try to delete, I get an error message. If I try to open, I get an error message. The emails are in the Deleted Items box, and I can open them from there. So it is really just the listing of them in the Inbox that appears – the listing is not connected to anything. Sort of like if you delete a program’s folder from your computer, you are left with the entry in the Add/Remove Programs and no way to get rid of that. (I know there is a way, but that’s not what I am asking for here :))
So what I need to know is, is there any way to delete the entry of an email that doesn’t exist? I thought about restoring the email from the Deleted Items, but I am afraid it will confuse WLM into not deleting either or just making matters worse. Google has not been helpful in this matter (or maybe I suck at my search terms) as it wants to tell me about deleting messages from the server and all that sort of problems. That’s not my problem though.
I know I’ve been a pain lately, but it’s so great to have this forum where the people can be trusted to give accurate information.
Thanks!
