I have a letter template that has Page 2 headers and footers that are different from Page 1. It works fine when I type new text into a blank document based on that template.
A problem arises when I try to paste text from another document into a new blank one. The second page header and footer revert to being the same as page one. Am I carrying some template info from the document where the text was copied? If so, how do I fix it?

When you copy text from another document and it includes a Section Break then you will be adding to your target document the header/footer/page setup that precedes that section break. So if you don’t want that to happen then you must ensure that the copied text does not include a section break.

Hi Howard,

It sounds to me like there is a style in the existing document that is coming over to your template when you copy/paste into your letter template. Try copying the text from the source document and then Paste Special > Unformatted Text into your template. Note that this will also lose any bold or italic you’ve applied.

Hi Jeanne,

Importing a Style definition from the source document via copy/paste won’t affect the page layout in the target document. Copying a Section break will, however. That said, your suggestion of pasting the copied text via Paste Special > Unformatted Text should delete the unwanted Section break.

Your letter files will be easier to use if you take advantage of the different first page header. See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/Letterhead.htm.

Thanks to all for your comments. Andrew; there is no section break in the text I am copying. Jeanne, Macropod; the Paste Special Unformatted seems to work, but not consistently. Pam, I did set up a different first page header, but I did page 1 first, rather than last, as your reference suggests. I will try it that way and report back. What is interesting is that my second page header says “First Page Header, Section 2”. Is that because I started with page 1? What should it say, if done correctly? BTW, that was a very good article on setting up templates.

I am suggesting that you get rid of the section break in your document and instead use the different first page header option.

Your “First Page Header, Section 2” label means you have a section break in the document. As you have probably noticed using a section break means–that to get what you want– you have to type up to the page limit and then move the cursor to the other side of the section beak and continue typing. If, when you copy and paste, the copied text goes past the page limit, you then have to move the overflow to the other side of the section break.

Yes, you can—and without having to move text around section breaks. That’s the point of using the different first page setting in a header or footer. The label for the first page will say “First Page Header, Section 1”, and the label for the second page will say “Header”.

You must have a section break in the document but it may be a continuous section break and already in the document before you paste in the text. If you want to remove any possible complications then you should remove that section break before adding the content.

Adding text to the existing template either before or after this section break will give you different results on subsequent pages so it is best to remove it until you can understand what is happening.

The fact that your p2 header is saying Section 2 says there is definitely a section break in the template.

If the template is only for letters with a different first page, remove the Section Break and use the Page Setup | Layout option of Different first page instead.

As Andrew said, you will get different results if you paste before or after the Section Break.
