i’m asking this for a friend. He just got a new PC with the current version of WORKS pre-installed. He cannot read WORKS 3.0 files, but can read 4.0 and above

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 17, 2002 at 5:37 pm #564419It has been a while since I upgraded and I don’t remember which acutal version numbers I was using but I had to go back to the old Works and save all my old files from W3.?(old version) to W2.?(older version). It warned that I would lose some formatting. Then load the W2.older version into the new program and save again as the newer version. And it was necessary to do some reformat to get the fonts, colors, etc back again. As I remember all the formulas and links came through OK but not the frills.
Seems like the new Works would read old files saved as .wk1 or .wk2 but not as .wks. I may be misremembering the actual extensions. Anyway it is an avenue to explore. GoodLuck.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 22, 2002 at 1:14 pm #565284The quick way is to load the old Works3 application on the new box, open each file individually with old Works3, then copy and paste each file into a blank page of Works5. That is, old ‘wps’ files will paste into new word processor pages, old ‘wdb’ files will paste into new database pages, and old ‘wks’ spreadsheet files will paste into new spreadsheet pages. Column headings may be lost in this translation, but can be re-entered.
Another route on the wdb/wks files is to open with the old W3 then ‘save as’ comma delimited, or tab delimited, then import to the new.
This would be a good time TRASH all the old (and new) Works stuff, and get into the 21st century with something like Office 2000/2002.
