I use WuMgr to update my Win 10 v21h2 laptop, and recently have noticed listings in the WuMgr update history that seem questionable. There are now 3 of them – identical except for the dates – and all are showing failed.

The ID says 9NBLGGH3FRZM.Microsoft.VCLibs.140, with failure dates of 6/3/22. 9/3/22, and 10/3/22, all with a Failed (0X80240034).

What is interesting is that all of the dates are in the future – none current or before today.

So – does anyone know what that means or why they are showing? None of those were ever listed in the pending updates, and I never hid them – but there they are listed in the update history. There are “only” those three – but initially there was only one, and over time(?) the additional ones were added.

Or – if they are dangerous in some way – how to get rid of them??

    Any ideas would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

March 8, 2022 in British convention numeric becomes 8/3/22

      March 8, 2022 in U.S. convention numeric becomes 3/8/22

That’s all I know. The dates are now, not future.

Thanks! So this is something that is trying to be installed each time I run WuMgr? Hope someone has an idea of what it is and why am I just seeing it now?

    • #2430603

WuMgr is just reporting what you told it to download/install. There is an error at the server or you do not have permissions in the target folder (why it’s using D:\Desktop I don’t know).

If Windows Update had problems it probably wouldn’t tell you anything except “trying to install”.

      cheers, Paul

Thanks! OK – first off – the image that is embedded within the text is NOT the one I put there – that should be the attached image. Don’t know where it got that one or why it is showing – but if anyone can remove it – please do. The attached image shows the three instances of that VCLibs.140.

WuMgr is just reporting what you told it to download/install.

That is just the issue – I didn’t tell it to do anything with that file – I never said to download it or install it or delete it or hide it. It isn’t ever in my list of what is pending. I’ve never seen those as download options at all.

I only use WuMgr to download and install the monthly updates when safe, and Defender updates.

There is an error at the server or you do not have permissions in the target folder (why it’s using D:\Desktop I don’t know). If Windows Update had problems it probably wouldn’t tell you anything except “trying to install”.

Not sure what that means or how to address it. I didn’t try to download those VCLibs updates, and never got any warning messages. I just noticed those failures in the list of Update History.

        What are they??

            Thanks for fixing that!

So – now that it is clearer what I am talking about – does anyone know what that VCLibs.140 is? Is it part of another update, maybe?

The window you’re viewing in WuMgr is the Update History which displays a history of all update attempts, regardless of how they were initiated.

VCLibs.140 is an app from the Microsoft Store so that’s what keeps trying to install it (and failing.)

It provides a C++ “bridge” connection between MS Store apps and the Windows desktop OS and is “suppose” to be automatically downloaded and installed whenever such a app needs it and it’s not already installed.

I’d suggest you run the MS Store troubleshooter or try the MS Store repair/reset options to see if that fixes the problem and allows the app to be installed.

If not, you can use the link provided by Alex5723 to download and try installing it manually, although if MS Store can’t install it, that might also fail.

Note: it’s an app (.appx) so you’ll need to use the App Installer or powershell to install it.

Thanks! OK – I guess I don’t understand. I don’t have/use the Microsoft Store – so why would this app keep trying to install itself?

I really don’t need or want to have anything to do with the MS Store – so is it even worth trying to fix it at this point? I can look into the troubleshooter – but if I never use it – why would I need it?

              Or

              VCLibs.140 is a component of C++

              do other programs use C++?

I only brought this up since it was something I’d never seen before.

If you have Win10, you have the Windows Store. The app is part of Win10.
Do you have Windows Store update disabled? It updates separately (is not a part of) from Win Update.

I don’t have it disabled – I’ve actually never even looked at it. How would I disable it?

            • #2430665

              Open the Microsoft Store app.
In the top bar on the right, click on the ID symbol (generic person). You don’t have to sign in.
              Click on App Settings.
Is App updates turned on or off?

Is App updates turned on or off?

It was on – I changed it to off. Is that right?

In that app, should I do anything with the “downloads and updates” page? That page is blank – is that because I turned off the updates? Should I turn it back on and update any of those manually?

So this will hopefully stop that VCLibs from trying to download?

              Thanks!

            • #2430674

You should leave it on if you have Apps (all the default apps that come with Win10) installed on the computer. If you turn it off, then all the apps don’t get updated. Those updates are not part of WU. They only get updated through the MS Store.

OK – but what about my original question of that VCLibs.140 update that was showing in WuMgr? Should I be concerned about that?

I want to be clear that I am not trying to have that not fail – I just don’t want it at all.

              Thanks for the help!

            • #2430687

I wouldn’t worry about it unless you have a problem.

Thanks! I haven’t noticed any problems, so I’ll keep an eye on it. I left the apps update on as I guess other things will need to be updated, but I’ve also never noticed anything about that in WuMgr.

I’ll look into updating WuMgr to the latest version as well!

              Thanks again for the help!

@LHiggins, I notice in the (new and corrected) screenshot that you’re using version 0.9a of WUMgr. I’m on version 1.1b.

Maybe you can try using 1.1b (or an even newer version if there is one) instead of 0.9a: it won’t hurt, and it might help with your situation.

      Good luck!

      do other programs use C++?

      Most certainly!

First off, VCLib stands for Visual C++ Library and there are many different versions of those libs.

If you install a program that requires a specific version of a C++ lib that’s not already installed on your system, the installer “normally” installs the missing version.

If you take a look thru Programs and Features (appwiz.cpl) you’ll likely find you have multiple entries for various Microsoft Visual C++ Libraries installed (my Win10 21H2 has 33 different ones) that were put there during the installation of a program that required that particular version.

However, VCLib.140 “only” applies to apps, not programs. That means you’ve got an app installed that requires that particular VCLib so it keeps trying to install it from the MS Store.

BTW, apps are normally installed via the MS Store I/F, but some programs will add one during the normal installation process “without” opening the MS Store.

      For example…

I use a NVIDIA graphics card and, when I installed the driver S/W for it, it added the “Nvidia Control Panelapp from the MS Store without actually opening the MS Store I/F (i.e. I never saw anything “on screen” that indicated it’d installed an app.)

The only way I found out was when a notification popped up letting me know a new version had been installed from the MS Store.

Thanks for that explanation! So – I really don’t use apps that I know of – but I will take a look at those in the MS Store and see if there are any that I do use. If not – then is it OK to just ignore those WuMgr attempts? Or is there a way to tell which app it might be that is trying to update? Or is it the MS Store itself maybe?

I do see 4 instances of C++ in the Programs and Features list, but no way to tell what they are related to. Both have dates well before this laptop (2008 and 2017) so I’m guessing they are part of the original programming.

I never got a notice that something wasn’t working or that anything had been downloaded or couldn’t run, so if I hadn’t happened to see that failed attempt in my update history, I’d never have even had the question.

The only actual changes I’ve made recently – probably right around when these failed VCLib updates showed up – was to update both Firefox and Thunderbird. Might it be something to do with one of those?

Thanks again for the help. Since “everything” seems to be working fine, I’m probably making more of this that needed – but great to learn a few more things!

        Have a good one!

Personally, I use SeaMonkey (which is basically Firefox ESR 91.6 & Thunderbird 60.0 rolled together as a single program) so am not sure if the stand alone versions install an app along side the actual program?

If you google VCLibs.140 for both of them, there are a lot of hits for Firefox getting a “VCRUNTIME140_1.dll” error when you run it.

That would be a runtime from VC lib version 140, but I wouldn’t think that’s your problem as those hits indicated Firefox wasn’t working to visit any sites and, obviously, yours is (unless you’re using a different browser to visit AskWoody?”)

          As for the errors…

You can either ignore them or, as PKCano pointed out above, disable the “Update apps automatically” option in MS Store to stop it from continually trying to install/update that lib.

If you disable the automatic updates, you’ll still be able to “manually” update any MS Store apps (in fact, that’s exactly what I do so my OS doesn’t get messed up by a “problematic” app update.)

As for the existing failure notifications…

The update history is simply a log of what happened during each update so there “should” be a way to delete specific entries from it. However, I’ve never found any sort of utility that allows you to do that (the actual log file itself appears to be in a “proprietary” MS format.)

There is a procedure you can use to clear the entire history by deleting the log file, but it requires multiple steps since the log can’t be deleted while its in use.

Actually, I am using FF on AW – so it probably isn’t that. I do have issues with FF on my Win 7 laptop at times, but alternate with Chrome when FF gets cranky. But FF seems to be fine on the Win 10. I’ve never gotten any VCRUNTIME140_1.dll error messages with it. But if I do – at least I’ll have some idea what the issue is.

If you disable the automatic updates, you’ll still be able to “manually” update any MS Store apps (in fact, that’s exactly what I do so my OS doesn’t get messed up by a “problematic” app update.)

That’s actually a good idea – thanks! That way I have some control over it and if there are any that I find I do use, I can update them myself. And then I shouldn’t see that WuMgr failed update anymore.

As to deleting it from the update history – that isn’t a big issue, so I can just leave them alone and see if I get any more of them as time goes on.

Thanks again for the help and information! Much appreciated!
