I just downloaded the sp1, installed (using thankfully the backup feature) and everything clicked along until I tried to connect to the internet. I use a linksys router-hub/cable modem connection, and the sp1 would not recognize my network hardware as being available, although everything was connected and I was getting all the “lights” on the router. My problem involves properly configuring my usb/ethernet connection, one that I’m sure is solvable, but xp was not able to fix on its own, and since I needed my internet connection, I reverted back. Just a word to all trying the service pack… Use the Back Up Option!!! SP 1 did mess with my device driver settings, and if you’re not fully comfortable with configuration and troubleshooting, you may want the option to go back. (Like I said, I will be able to get things to work, I’m sure, but I did not have the time/energy to fool with xp, so I was glad to be able to go back!)

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerOctober 9, 2002 at 7:23 am #622918I have a similar problem using an SMC barricade DSL router. Since installing SP1, when I boot up I can’t connect with anything (not even the router), and other machines can’t see me. It looks as if all is well–the network icon is in the systray, the ip addresses, etc. are correct. The activity status shows outgoing packets, but none incoming. I had been using DHCP, but switched to fixed addresses, and continue with the same problem. I even tried deleting the network connection and going through the wizard to setup a new one. Nothing helps. However, if I disactivate the network connection and then re-activate it, everything starts working fine.

AskWoody MVPOctober 9, 2002 at 12:47 pm #622956Here’s a copy from a post in the MS general XP newsgroup:
“As I have been recommending to many on this forum with SP1
problems, Download the entire 133MB SP1 install from
Microsoft, close your internet connection, unplug any USB
devices other than your keyboard and mouse and run SP1
setup. SP1 express install has many problems installing
over broadband connections, especially if you use a USB
modem. This worked for me!”Give it a try.
hth,
Joe--Joe
