Is it true that XP and ME do not make telnet available?

In XP, use the RUN command and type telnet for your answer to that much of it. Of course, that’s the MS client. You didn’t say what you prefer……

Thanks Doc, is it XP and ME that are making DOS unavailable? I do use the Run command for telnet when using machines that are running ME and XP. Having 98 on my personal machine leaves me with the natural urge to hit dos. Also thank you for the tips on the IP programs, I am having a look at them all. Terrific amount of useful information on this site, I will be forever learning!

DOS-like command prompts are available in both Windows ME and XP. To access the command line, the process is different for each:

Click Start – Run.

• For Windows ME, enter COMMAND and press ENTER
• For Windows NT/2000/XP, enter CMD and press ENTER[/list]These are also buried in the Start Menu under Accessories.

  You can then type TELNET at the command line, which results in the same thing that Al has provided. Bear in mind that these are not “true” DOS prompts – OK, it is in WIndows ME, but it runs as a process/program just like any other. In Windows NT/2000/XP, COMMAND is also available, but CMD is preferred, as it is designed to be a true 32-bit command line interface (CLI) that the operating system has more control over.

Hi Mark, I am on an ME machine at present and have been loading a new XP notebook for a client (stop laughing, even I can follow Dell’s on screen instructions for hopeless users 🙂 – both of you’re DOS commands work exactly as you say, and thanks for telling me where they buried the DOS prompt in Accessories on XP, Id never have found that one thinking DOS was completely gone from XP. Old habits die hard, but you folks are all teaching me new ones to try out and learn. Many thanks again for all you’re excellent advice.
