I have tried three different variants of Ubuntu Linux:
* Ubuntu
* Xubuntu
* Lubuntu
All of these are available at http://www.ubuntu.com.
I have found that I like Xubuntu the best:
* The interface is more like Windows than the other two.
* It is more stable and polished than Lubuntu.
* It is lighter than Ubuntu.
Most of the software is already installed, unlike Ubuntu or Lubuntu.
Xubuntu runs well on my old, lame computer. And web browsing is fast with Opera, or with Firefox (with No Script and AdBlockPlus loaded).
A couple of days ago, whenever I would browse, Xubuntu would crash. Yesterday that problem had disappeared. My guess is that the crashes were caused by a defective update which was automatically installed; and then a new update was installed which fixed the bad update.
I decided to go with a variant of Ubuntu, because Ubuntu is well-supported by Canonical, and there is a lot of software available which works with Ubuntu.
