There’s a reason why I wait before recommending that you install patches, yes? News came yesterday afternoon that every.single.Windows.patch released

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody PlusMarch 27, 2020 at 11:07 am #2211444Thanks Woody.
While I updated one of my two machines to W10 recently, this sort of escapade makes me think it would be sensible to keep the other one on W7 for at least the duration of home confinement during the coronavirus crisis. If something goes pear-shaped with updates on the W10 machine I can at least keep the W7 machine running.

AskWoody PlusMarch 27, 2020 at 11:15 am #2211448Thank you Woody.
We will wait for your go ahead before installing Windows 10 updates.
Other than pausing updates by the “Pause updates for 7 days” option under Windows Update is there a way to disable updates all together?

ManagerMarch 27, 2020 at 11:59 am #2211476There are many ways to block updates.
You can use the Defer quality updates setting, if you like, but I find it much easier just to Pause.
You can use third party update blockers. They seem to work fine, but I find Pause just as easy.
You can block updates by digging into Windows internals, but they’re more hassle than they’re worth – and flipping bits is always prone to problems.

ManagerMarch 27, 2020 at 12:03 pm #2211479I corrected the main post. The March “optional, non-security, C/D Week” patch for 1903 and 1909 isn’t the penultimate optional patch. It’s the pen-penultimate patch. (Say that ten times real quick.) We’ll have those step-in-the-offal “optional” patches in April and May.
Thx @b

AskWoody PlusMarch 27, 2020 at 1:19 pm #2211527We are not using a vpn/RDP.
Susan/Woody, do you recommend installing all of the Windows 10 1903 March updates as pushed out by Microsoft now or wait?

AskWoody PlusMarch 27, 2020 at 2:22 pm #2211546I’ve seen this bug.
I’ve been allowed to bring my work PC home for teleworking purposes. Yesterday, I installed the Pulse Secure application on my work PC so I could VPN into a sensitive work network. As soon as I make a connection in the Pulse Secure application, I get the “Limited network” (no internet) warning. I can verify the warning is accurate. During one VPN session, I had Google Drive open in a browser at the same time and was warned I didn’t have a connection any more. As soon as I disconnect from the VPN, the network comes back to normal.
I consider this an annoyance. I have my personal PC right next to my work PC on my desk, so I still have internet access while using the VPN. Plus, I don’t need the VPN up all the time, so it’s a limited impact even on my work PC.
This will have no impact on my home PC because I don’t use RDP or a VPN there. I’ve already installed one of the cumulative updates for March (KB4540673). The 15-day deferral on March cumulative update KB4551762 expired today and I’ll be installing that later this evening, after I do the appropriate backup.

GuestMarch 27, 2020 at 3:37 pm #2211563So by the Time MS gets all the issues fixed with 1903/1909 Windows 1809 will be EOL and maybe I should just wait until then. But I’m unsure if 1909 will still be offered as the normal feature update for 1809 as MS may be pushing out 2004 by then. And maybe MS should consider holding off a little longer with 2004’s release to a wider number of end users, while all the other things are going on, because with new feature updates come even more new issues as well that really could make matters worse than they are currently.

AskWoody_MVPMarch 27, 2020 at 4:18 pm #2211585I doubt whether version 2004 will be released before 1809 is EOL on May 12th.
Right now on version 2004, Windows Update Cleanup doesn’t seem to be working from either Disk Cleanup or Storage Sense

Thank you for giving the go head to install the March patches.
We will install them shortly.
If things go badly we will have Sunday to recover.
Why an I working, it is the weekend?
Oh yea, I am confined to quarters even though I have not been bad – at least not bad enough to be confined to quarters.
