    Hello,
Having switched to win 11 23h2 on my laptop, I notice that the default choice of third-party software (Bandizip in my case) for ZIP and 7z files is not retained after rebooting the PC. Apparently, Microsoft is imposing the use of Windows Explorer, as it has already done before with Edge.
Has anyone been in this situation and found a solution?

    Thank you.

      Settings App\Apps\Default Apps
You can set the default by the app or (at the bottom) file type (extension) ot link.

You can right-click on zipped file, choose “Open with” then “choose another app”
Point to the 7Zip executable, and be sure to check the box “always use this app/make default”

        @PKCano

I tried all this, in vain ! After the reboot, Explorer is the default again.

        Thank you anyway.

How old is Bandizip? Is it a current version? Often when an app won’t stay default it’s older and isn’t using the right settings to be default.

            Hi Susan,

            It’s the last version (7.32 buil 65001)- I never had this problem with Win11 21H2 or 22H2.

I got in touch with their support without result.

It appears functionality of some internals of Bandzip only work with Windows 10 according to their HELP page.

As the most recent filedates within Bandzip are from 14th Sept 2023 and Win 11 23H2 was released 31st October 2023, I’d hazzard a guess that the utility suppliers likely need to update for Windows 11 23H2 to operate as intended after copious amounts of Microsoft effluent under the bridge.

At this point I suggest a worthy solid alternative :
              https://www.7-zip.org/
Works on every Windows from XP onwards to Windows 11 without issues or loss of functions by comparison (even has checksums verification) and FREE.

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

If you can survive the user interface…
I find it less than intuitive.

              cheers, Paul

I agree with Paul T, but I gave it a try anyway. The result is the same if you set the parameters in the program or in Win 11.
To prevent this from happening, I must refrain from updating via the Store or Windows update. As a user of Eazy-Fix (Rollback software), I’ve been able to make this observation.

      Ok thanks !
Paul T’s suggestion put me on the right track to a solution …

In 7zip, file association is presented in 2 columns: one for the current user and the other for all users (this is not the case with Bandizip). When opening the program, the zip extension had no program specified for the current user and “CompressedFolder” for all users.

From there, my research on the net led me to an answer on the Microsoft forum (in French): Delete default application by file type via the register …

      Access the following Registry key:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

Once you locate the extension, right-click and select Remove. This would remove the program’s default file association.
For above to take effect to restart your PC.
If you are still not able to delete file associations, you also need to delete the same key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

Problem solved (until next update???). Thanks again to all !

Moderator Note: Had to add a carriage return to the registry location so it would show the whole string.
Moderator Note: changed registry key to show as a single item (enclose in back ticks).

Use Shift+carriage return to single space instead of double space.
Will delete the other post. 🙂
