Success!!! Thank you both! I took the following steps:
      1. Uninstalled RealPlayer (no ra files on computer..no need for RP)
      2. Re-installed WMP
      3. Uninstalled Office Professional 2003
      4. Reinstalled Office Professional 2003
Sound played but only upon click. Could not get sound to play at beginning of Slide 1.
Checked that everything was OK by creating a blank presentation with music. Played perfectly.
Rebuilt Slide 1 of my friend’s presentation to put music in first. Then I added the graphics. (There was no entrance animation) Played perfectly throughout the 9 slides of his presentation.

Thank you again for your help. Much appreciated.

Thank you, again, Hans (and John). I will re-install WMP when I have access to my friend’s computer and I’ll let you know the results.

Thank you, Hans. I agree and will suggest that we uninstall Real Player. I have one question, though. You suggested reinstalling WMP. Isn’t it the MCI player that PowerPoint uses rather than WMP?
      Thanks again. Much appreciated.

Thank you, Hans and John. The mp3 in question was one that I created using my friend’s computer. I do agree that the problem could be with Real Player. Do you think that it is advisable to uninstall Real Player besides re-installing WMP?
      Thank you again.

Thank you for responding. I expect to be at my friend’s house in the next few days and I’ll see if I can change it.

I’ll try that. However, my friend did receive the file, with the .doc extension. Does Vista prevent a file extension change?
      Thanks,

Thank you, Hans. At least I know that there’s nothing I was missing.

One other question: It appears that when I send to PowerPoint, I can do this only with text. Pictures and charts do not get sent. Am I correct or is there something I do not realize?
      Thank you very much.

    • in reply to: Where is Send To | PowerPoint? (Word 2007) #1063781

Thank you so much. Because of your quick help, I was able to teach the technique of going from Word To PowerPoint to a 10 year old girl who is using this in school. Incidentally, I did notice that from PowerPoint to Word, it’s in Publish and it specifically states that its use is to create handouts in Word.
      Thank you again.

(Edited by charlotte on 15-Apr-07 09:29. made link live)

I am replying to my own post. The solution has been found.

The above refers to the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. When you download and use the Utility, it points to all the Microsoft and non-Microsoft programs that can be permanently removed. It worked perfectly. I did notice, however, that the listings in the Start Menu remained. It was very easy to delete them.
Thank you to all who responded. I hope that this solution helps others.

Thank you for responding. I downloaded and used the Removal Wizard. Unfortunately, it did not recognize any Office 2003 applications. It did recognize Office 2002 applications which are not even on the computer. I tried to remove them through the Wizard but they keep showing up everytime I begin the Wizard. Incidentally, when I tried to download a Word template, I received an error message saying that the computer had failed validation. One of the reasons was Publisher 2002, which is not on the machine. Another reason was OneNote 2003. But, I cannot uninstall it. Could there be something stuck in the registry? Thank you very much.

Thank you for responding. I already have the files in a separate folder. I clicked on the Setup file for Office. (Office PRO11) I got the same error message. There is also a file just related to Outlook. I clicked on that and it called for the key code. I entered the key code and it began to treat it as an installation.
You spoke about directing Setup to this folder. How do I do that? Also, I noticed that in Add/Remove Programs there are ralso eferences to Office XP and Office 2000. I tried to remove them but no success.
Is there anything else I can do?
      Thank you very much.

    • in reply to: DDR? (IE 7) #1058063

Update: I called the Help Desk of the New York City Department of Education. They had no clue. I also called Enterprise Tech Support for Symantec. They could not help me because I do not have a Corporate program installed on the computer. I explained to Symantec that all I wanted was ti speak to a technician to see if they had any explanation. That was not possible. Probably I’ll never come o a full resolution but at least I can access the web page on my laptop.

    • in reply to: DDR? (IE 7) #1057831

As of last night I can log onto that page. I don’t think I did anything to make a difference. It just happened. One of the IT people at my school was familiar with DDR. He suggested that if I had cleared my cookies and the History, that would have solved the problem. A friend of mine, a computer techie and also a teacher, was also familiar with DDR. He felt that something on that site triggered it. However, he offered no explanation as to why the problem remained at home. Another surprise: I tried going to that same page today using one of the school’s computers. It worked!! I was in shock.
I was told that these settings are made at the central office of the Bd. Of ED
By the way, I also called Symantec. A wasted call. The “techie” did not understand the problem at all and did not know what DDR meant.
