Thanks for the reply, Joe. Outlook is up to date with all patches and updates but I have not tried your suggestion. I will do so this afternoon and revert.

    • Go to the insert tab, on the right of the layout you will find Date and Time. Click on it and a menu will give you the option you want.

I have also seen this problem but rarely. I use Word 2007 with UK English and my observations suggest that the 2014-11-6 option only appears when editing other people’s documents (ie documents where presumably that was the default option when created). Does Word keep this option as part of its formatting?

    • in reply to: Best Outlook backup software #1468765

For years I have simply replicated the pst file to my backup drive and imported from it when necessary, particularly when I get a new computer or sync. my laptop. It works fine but has one large hole – it does not backup my email account info and rules. I have never found a way to back these up and restore to a different computer or OS so have laboriously had to restore them manually each time. Any suggestions?

    • in reply to: Windows update KB2975719 #1467081

What does the update actually do? Perhaps you don’t need it anyway?

It apparently is not a Security Update as my PSI comes up 100% but it is supposed to have some bug fixes, improve performance, add miracast etc. I am concerned that if I cannot get it installed (and as of now I can think of nothing further to try) the next ‘update’ to Win 8.1 will require this to be installed (remember 8.1 update 1 of ill repute?).

    • in reply to: Windows update KB2975719 #1467071

Thanks for the suggestion, but even after following the instructions to the letter the update refuses to install saying as usual “the following updates were not installed” – very helpful!! Has anybody got any further suggestions, please? I am at my wits end having tried to install both with and without Windows Update!! Thanks for your help.

    • in reply to: Upgrading to MSXML6 #1460400

      Here’s the whole story.

For example, Quicken 2014 will install msxml4 from 2003 if there isn’t a version on your machine!

Recently, Microsoft announced end of all support for msxml4. No more updates. Time will tell if they hold to this if a serious security exposure is found.

There is nothing an end user can do about this – its the software vendors who need to move off of 4 onto 6. Until then, ignoring the Secunia warning and hoping for the best is all you can do.

I have just been through this with Quicken. You CAN update the 2003 version of msxml4 to SP3 (a 2009 or 2010 file, I believe and the last update to version 4) via the Microsoft website and Quicken will continue to work fine (at least my 2012 Quicken Deluxe does). All it did so far as I could see was to update the dll (in the sysWOW64 folder of my 64-bit machine) and place a folder in Program Files which contained only an rtf copy of the licence which I promptly deleted.

    • in reply to: Malwarebytes Pro scan #1408606

I seem to recall some years ago installing a freebie called freeview which still exists. Its website told you that they were using opencandy and gave you a link to another page which told you how to uninstall it. My recollection is that it was the deletion of one or more registry entries. I followed the instructions and still have the program on my computer and Malwarebytes pro does not flag it so it is probably gone. Google freeview and see if the uninstall info is still there – it would hopefully work on any opencandy installation.

Thank you jwitalka, that was my inclination and I am grateful for the suggestion to leave well alone

    • in reply to: Microsoft pulls security update 2823324 #1388393

I installed this update and have had zero problems either with the install or subsequently (installed 4/11/13). Indeed my system is actually working better since that series of updates than it did before! Looking at Microsofts article on uninstallation I note that it specifically does NOT reference using Windows Update to uninstall it and I am not inclined to go through the hoops in the article. Two questions: (1) Can I uninstall using Windows Update as my system allows me to boot up; and (2) should I?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    • in reply to: POP, IMAP, and Outlook 2010 #1343634

Cherryphilip, thank you very much – you have been most helpful. I use both gmail and my ISP for my email accounts but believe I can configure them with no trouble, especially gmail which defaults to IMAP on most clients. I am going to copy this thread to keep it on my computer. Thanks again!

    • in reply to: POP, IMAP, and Outlook 2010 #1343150

Thanks so much for your reply and apologies for the delay in replying – I was away. One last question – when you say “keep (my edited emails) in POP” what do you mean? If I switch my settings to IMAP, won’t it sync everything? How will it differentiate the edited emails which I want to “keep in POP”? Sorry to be a nuisance but I’m trying to get a handle on this and am not succeeding very well as I have no experience with IMAP.

    • in reply to: POP, IMAP, and Outlook 2010 #1342631

leonk, you are correct generally but using gmail all the messages are saved on their server even after you delete them off your computer.

    • in reply to: POP, IMAP, and Outlook 2010 #1342628

Where did you get that from? Outlook has had an edit function for years and I use it every day. Presently I use Outlook 2007 and you will find the function under Other Actions in the Message ribbon. You can add, delete or edit the text and add or remove attachments then clicking Save saves them in your email on the computer. That is why I was surprised by Cherryphilip’s assertion that POP would synchronise the inbox (with the server I assume) – it doesn’t on mine so far as I know. I certainly do not forward them to myself.

    • in reply to: POP, IMAP, and Outlook 2010 #1342583

Thanks Cherryphilip. I do not presently save the edited emails back to the server at all (I didn’t know I could) – I just save them on my hard drive in whatever Outlook folder I keep those emails in (I have several depending on the topic/sender). As I understand you if I use IMAP the edited email will be saved back to my account in gmail in place of the original in whichever folder I save it in. Is that correct? And if I commence using IMAP now will all my previous emails downloaded in POP then get synchronised too? Thank you so much for your time and assistance.

    • in reply to: POP, IMAP, and Outlook 2010 #1342573

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I mean I use POP to get the messages (not MAPI) and then edit them in Outlook using the edit function then save the edited email in Outlook.
