I suppose I could change to IMAP, I have a few POP accounts in use. I believe I have to delete the POP accounts first and then redo them as IMAP. I’ve read that I shouldn’t lose any data. I hope that is right. The PST files are backed up anyway so I shouldn’t lose much even if it goes wrong.

Thanks, so from what you say my current POP connection to Gmail in Outlook 2021 won’t work after Monday?

    • in reply to: Can’t get email? #2706644

Fast forward: I’m using Outlook 2021 Pro and have two ‘Comcast’ emails and two ‘Gmail’ emails. In an hour-long chat with Microsoft, the agent finally told me the issue only applies to “3rd-party” email clients (i.e. Thunderbird)

First, do they really mean that since I’m using a supported version of Outlook (2021), that my emails will continue to work after the Sept. deadline?

Yes, because the recent change only applied to Outlook.com accounts (inc. Hotmail/Live/MSN).

I was hoping to see an answer to this email too.

      What’s the question?

      You’ve just answered it. Thanks!

Can someone please confirm or deny info I received from Microsoft re the “Modern Authentication” changes coming up?
Didn’t get the email that y’all did, but got the random/frequent pop-up asking for password.

Second, being skeptical, I installed Thunderbird, and the “Authentication Method” allows the “OAuth2” setting.  My Outlook doesn’t show that as an option…

Just because I’m paranoid, doesn’t mean ‘they’ are ‘NOT’ out to get me!

What I have ascertained so far is that Copilot is helpless without logging into the PC with a Microsoft account and using Edge to open Bing, which is the source of the AI

So, during update process Microsoft should check for Microsoft account and if there is none NOT install Copilot

I do have a Microsoft account but I choose not to login to my computer with it. If they only install it on computers with a Microsoft account I guess they would still install it on mine.

What I have ascertained so far is that Copilot is helpless without logging into the PC with a Microsoft account and using Edge to open Bing, which is the source of the AI.  In my systems, including my recently resurrected and upgraded Dell Latitude E5420 there is no Edge, no Bing anything.  As for the upcoming Office integration, I won’t be buying into that.

I use a local account to log into my computer so am I safe even if I continue using Edge? I like to keep it on my computer to check that websites I am involved with work right in that browser but I may do away with that luxury to avoid adverts on my desktop and other nasties if necessary.

    • in reply to: Why would you use OneNote at all? #2500162

As I mentioned in my first post, Office 2021 doesn’t include OneNote so you either have a Windows Store version or one from a previous version of Office.

I guess one man’s ‘unintuitive and klunky’ is another’s ‘easy to use’ as I have always found it to be the simplest and most intuitive note taking App out there. I haven’t really noticed much of a change in how it works over the years. It just seems straightforward and right to me. 🙂

    • in reply to: Why would you use OneNote at all? #2499884

Funny this should be an article in today’s newsletter as I was looking at changing my Office programme to the latest version yesterday when I discovered it no longer has OneNote. I read that Microsoft are making big changes to it and it will eventually be offered as a stand alone App. I use it a lot and find it very useful. I thought I would try the version in their online store but had no end of trouble with it. Firstly it either wanted to use my Microsoft Account or an organisation account. I don’t have one of those. I really don’t like using my Microsoft account as there seems to be a problem that although it appears to recognise my email, it ties itself to my backup email instead. As this is on a purchased domain name that could disappear in the future I am not keen to continue using it. Also, it was able to import one of my OneNote notebooks it threw up an error when I tried to import my main one.

This has put me off OneNote a bit…. that was until I started looking at the alternatives. I tried Evernote which has an inferior layout in my opinion. I really like how OneNote does things but if it’s going to be more difficult to even use it then I am not so sure. I dislike software that insists on storing your files in the cloud. I am happy to backup to the cloud but not have my main files there. It would mean no access to my notes without the Internet. The fact that my Microsoft account appears to be in some spiraling tangle with no easy way to fix it also puts me off.

I was hoping for a comment regarding my having ‘None’ in RedReason in the registry but still not being offered 22H2.

Hmm I have ‘None’ in RedReason but I am not being offered the update. 🙁

    • in reply to: Upgrade or not? #2458877

Thanks both. I think I’ll wait at least until the next big Windows 11 update before doing it. It looks as though combined taskbar buttons must be the default in Windows 10 because that’s what I seem to have. I can see that uncombined ones might be easier so I’ll look at that. If I do prefer it I may have to get the third party software you mention, Sky.

yes, I am getting this suddenly this evening. I am glad it’s not just me. It seemed to happen around the same time my ESET antivirus programme updated itself so I thought it was that I have even uninstalled ESET to no avail.
