I’ve avoided the KB5050411 so far.  (Using MS Catalog rather than Windows Update automatic download, plus the pause settings)

Q: if you are relying on the Windows 7 Backup/Restore and have File History for data and Windows System Images, does it require having KB5050411? (Ya, I know 3rd party backups are better – no need for a reminder ;0!)

I was just going to do the usual manual download and install for only the .NET CU and Windows CUs for this month.

Maybe a dumb question, but I’m curious whether this reg entry would block a local (C2R) version of MS Outlook if you had to reinstall it?

Wow, thanks Will, what a great article and great discussion points from others!
And timely too… I just literally came home with a new printer from a retailer. It is an HP LaserJet M139we. Normally I do much more research, but I have dealt with the tech manager of that store for a number of years and trust her judgement.

My current printer is a Canon Pixma MX310… bought in 2008 or 2009 (not a mistype, it really is that old!). It wasn’t wireless, was a 4-in-1 (included FAX) and only started letting me down recently. I had been able to get it going when it got stuck, but not anymore. The only other problem with it was the cost of ink cartridges ($70ish) getting to be almost more that a cheap new printer! And I expected thy would be getting harder to find, although I hadn’t been faced with that yet.

Anyway, the tech manager said I just needed to register with set it up, register with HP and to do that I would need an HP account (via downloaded HP app). I groaned inwardly at that, but figured I could get around it somehow.

Before unboxing it, I did a little research on whether I could simply set up by USB connection, thus avoiding the wireless connection and HP app/account requirement. Some people were also complaining that you couldn’t scan unless you were connected to internet! Finally, there are the articles about security flaws with those printers (as someone else may have eluded to above).

The tech manager also mentioned the change in ink types, and that is why you have to print pages every day or so to ‘keep the ink flowing’ in cartridge type printers, something you avoid with Laser Printers/Toners. I NEVER did that with my old Pixma… it would go for a month without use, and never had issue unless it truly was running out of ink. I don’t get the argument … if all the cartridges changed to the new type of ink, then I should have had a problem by now.

Also, with the Pixma I could use it without buying color cartridges… almost sounds like you can’t do that anymore with many printers. I don’t care about color printing, so this new HP Laser Jet only has black toner.

If I tend to print very infrequently, but may go in spurts like at Christmas, tax time or when I have a major project requiring printing – why would I want to have a subscription? Why should I be forced to get a subscription?

The other printer I thought about buying before being convinced the HP was a better choice (on sale for $50!) was another simple Canon Pixma TS3720 Wireless Multi-function Color Ink-Jet Printer. Replacement cartridges are only $24 for black and $30 for the multi-color pack. I understand I can simply leave the color cartridges in place even when empty of ink and still use black only printing.

I’d be interested in knowing if anyone with a recently purchased HP found a way around all this?

And, thoughts on the cheaper Canon Pixma? I am assuming I could still use USB with it if you wanted to print while offline for some reason.

      Thanks!
PS Just checked, the Pixma will work with high-speed USB cable.

Same here (toggled on, never seen the orange dot) –  but if this came from the Sept updates, I haven’t yet installed them as per Master Patch list advice.

Susan, thanks for alerting us to the sneaky install of the Copilot ‘chat provider’ app. I found it installed on my Win 10 Home 22H2 PC, much to my surprise.  I was able to use the ‘uninstall’ button to get rid of it.

I didn’t realize it came in with an Edge update (123.0.2420.81 or perhaps the previous one), and am surprised beta versions are installed without any warning that they are a beta version?

Edge is not my primary browser, so I have to remember to go in and update it periodically (doesn’t automatically update because I use metered connection to block updates.)

I had already followed your guidance and  blocked copilot with your reg keys, and made sure the Edge settings for Copilot were off.

Sorry Chris, I think the link got gibbled when I switched between ‘Visual’ and ‘Text’ in the reply box, and I didn’t notice! It was supposed to just be to the home page for that site. I too would have been interested in a survey :)!

Sounds like you did get some useful info from the site, even just to see the schedule for testing, and yes they will update that once they know what 2024’s sched will be.

In terms of usefulness… you never know!  We had it go off when we were driving through the prairies and there was a thunderstorm with funnel clouds and hail, so we were able to detour to avoid it.

Seems like a lot of bother trying to remove or monkey with your Android OS in terms of the Emergency Alert System. Can’t speak to annoyances from other Android apps that you want to remove permanently from your LG phone.

Here is a site specific to Canadian Emergency Alerts:
https://www.alertready.ca… and yes, it is the official one, as found from the Gov of Canada public safety site.

This FAQ suggests you can’t opt out, but you could put the phone on silent mode on the test dates/times, which are really only a couple of times a year:
      https://support.alertready.ca/hc/en-us/articles/4405946016019-Can-I-opt-out-of-receiving-alerts-

Here’s the test schedule with dates/times for each province:
      https://www.alertready.ca/testing-schedule/

Not sure why you’d be getting USA alerts. I’m probably closer to a USA border than you and I’ve never gotten any! Maybe that needs to be addressed by your service provider/carrier?

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: Installing just the updates #2569198

Just wanted to point out that Firefox is actually at 114.02 now.  The Master Patch list for June 27th says to update to 114.01.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 2: Are you still on Windows 10 21H2? #2565139

Windows 10 Home 21H2 on elderly Dell Inspirion 5749 laptop that can’t be upgraded to Win 11.

I have updates set to paused (with metered connection), and extended to July 13 by using the quick on/off of airplane mode trick. Up to date as of April’s recommended patches (installed April CU KB5025221, avoided the secure boot patch KB5012170).

I have used the registry trick to hold the version at Win 10 21H2, but know I need to get to Win 10 22H2.

Since the versions from 2004 to 22H2 are based on the same core, and I haven’t had any issues with drivers or anything else, can I assume that it’s a pretty straightforward matter of upgrading by changing the registry entry to Win 10 22H2 and using the ‘check for updates’ under the Windows Update Settings?

Or, am I at risk of getting the patches (secure boot patch, etc) that Susan says to avoid?

    • I have had the same issue with it appearing to stall at 97%, you have to just pack your patience.  It will complete, mine always has, but it does give me a panicky feeling. After researching it as you have, I couldn’t find any problems or solutions. I find it’s best to just go do something else, have a coffee, and don’t check on it for a couple of hours. If you have an older computer (as I do), it might just take a lot longer than other people with newer computers are saying theirs take to complete.

    • in reply to: Final patches for 2022 #2515005

Yes, I get that 3.5 is irrelevant – I was trying to be clear on describing the sub KBs contents – both included 3.5 along with either 4.8 or 4.8.1.

I have .NET 4.8.1 so therefore I only install the sub KB for 4.8.1, correct?

    • in reply to: Final patches for 2022 #2514451

Question about the 2 sub KBs that show up under the .NET CU parent KB – looks like one of the subs is for .NET 3.5/4.8 framework and the other for .NET 3.5/4.8.1

If installing manually do you need both?  Or if you have .NET 3.5/4,8.1 framework can you just install the one sub KB?

    • in reply to: august 2022 cumulative update #2476645

I updated CU KB5016616 on an elderly DELL (Win 10, 21H1, Home X64), everything was fine right after the install and restart; but the next day it took forever to start up.  The taskbar items wouldn’t appear, although I could open various apps from the start menu or desktop icons.  BUT if I minimized them, they completely disappeared, but they were evidently still running as seen on Task Manager.

I noticed many of those ESENT errors again!  I haven’t seen that for a very long time (maybe  Nov 2021-ish when many others were reporting the same), but it disappeared after a subsequent update.

      Has anyone else noticed that?

Today everything started as per normal.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: July updates make some hot and bothered #2467301

I’m happy to report that the July update KB5015807 installed fine on Windows 10 21H1 Home (older DELL laptop), and didn’t affect printing with an ‘ancient’ Canon Pixma USB printer.

Just for kicks, before I tested printing, I looked at the printer settings to see if the extra Copy of the installed printer was there and it wasn’t. I had to restart the Print Spooler service, but everything was fine afterwards.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Should we patch? #2458234

Same for me… .NET updates never show up in installed updates via Control Panel, but show up as Quality Updates under the Win Update View Update History. I am running Win 21H1 x64 Home. Maybe the Pro version shows the .NET updates in both places?
