I’ve been using ESET NOD32 for many years and very pleased with it. Catch it when on sale and usually pay about $5 – $7 per PC/year I buy the 3 or 5 machine license pack.

Do you happen to run any scripts to hide certain updates and block Windows 10 after updating? Some of the scripts out there changed the update settings to those after completion.

If you can find your key, you can install with a generic key https://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-windows-8-1-retail-and-oem-iso/#Evaluation

After installation you can update the key with your legit key (may require phone activation)

Lets start back at the beginning. Are you trying to create an account actually named “Administrator”? That’s a reserved Windows account. Can you share what your old account name was? Can you post a screenshot of your C:\Users folder?

This is Windows 7 correct? What is your computer brand and model?

Create a linux live cd or usb drive. Restart computer tapping f-12, f-2, esc key or whatever your computer uses to access the boot menu, and choose to boot from CD or USB.

If there isn’t a key to get to boot menu go into the bios and set it to boot to cd or whatever first.

Make sure you have another external HDD or thumbdrive large enough to copy your files to and use the linux OS to browse your Windows drive and copy/paste files to the external drive.

Create your new profile with a different name. Example: YouName2. Make it an admin or use the built-in Administrator account and turn on show hidden files and folders. Navigate to C:\Users and see if you see your old user account folder is there. If so, you should be able to look through it and copy your files. You may have to take ownership of the folder.

I usually use a linux boot disk to recover data.

If a system restore to an earlier point doesn’t solve it try this

How to restore the correct user profile after Windows starts logging in with a temporary user profile.ย  https://kb.uwplatt.edu/page.php?id=33215

If none of that works, maybe create a new profile and copy your data over.

My experience mirrors yours. Stable, no noticeable issues. So much so we have upgraded about 50 machines we maintain that are running Win 10 and upgraded quite a few Windows 7 machines. The machines vary in specs from a lowly pentium 1.4 with 2GB RAM to I7s with 32GB RAM running a wide assortment of software. Have had no reported issues and just a couple little glitches during the upgrades.

Not sure I’m ready to say “impressed” but very satisfied ๐Ÿ™‚

Don’t know if you’ve tried OPHCrack Live CD but I’ve recovered a few machines with it. Here’s a tutorial on how to use it.

That machine is still pretty usable. I’ve upgraded much older lower speced machines. The only thing I’d add to all the above is to consider replacing your cmos battery for a couple$ and doing a good cleanup prior to upgrading if you go that route. Remember to check your bios settings prior to replacing the battery.

February 25, 2019 at 9:51 am in reply to: Office 2013 Question #331228

I had this occur on a laptop upgrading to Win 10. A repair of Office did fix it BUT I had to enter the product key. Was a bit of a chore since the client saved his key card but couldn’t remember what account he used to get the actual key. After some trial and error we were lucky enough to find the account and retrieve the key.

Glad to hear things have been working pretty well for you. Can you provide any more details around the โ€œfull cleanup and maintenanceโ€ bit?

Just a good thorough maintenance disk cleanup, sfc, chdsk, defrag.
One other thing I do is disable any A/V, MBAM etc from running during the upgrade. After upgraded I re-enable them.

      February 20, 2019 at 1:28 pm in reply to: Small Business… Upgrade from 1709 to 1803 or 1809? #329704

After doing some testing and fresh installs of 1809, I’ve upgraded approximately 45 machines from 1709 and 1803 to 1809 over the last few weeks. Only one issue with a system that had redirected user folders on 1803 but it was easily cleaned up (basically created 2 copies of user folders).

Haven’t had any issues reported and quite a few with older machines stating their machines “felt” faster. That could have just been due to doing a full cleanup and maintenance prior to the update and after.
