AskWoody PlusTry this.

AskWoody PlusRan both as suggested. The logs are attached. I’m not seeing anything in there that stands out but as I said I’m not knowledgeable enough to know for sure.

AskWoody PlusSo every day since May 20 there is a red X with the time I started the system saying “Windows was not properly shut down”. Under technical details it says “The previous system shutdown at 8:00:29 PM on 6/18/2023 was unexpected.” No other details.

AskWoody PlusThanks for that. I’ll give it a try and see what happens. Any reason not to assign B to the flash drive? It’s been a long time since I’ve had a floppy drive with that letter and it’s not likely to be used by anything else.

AskWoody PlusThanks for the info. I was trying not to fall too far behind in updates, after reading a couple of weeks ago that it was OK to do the 2004 update. Otherwise I’m in no hurry, so I’ll do as you suggest and wait until it’s offered by WU.

AskWoody PlusNot seeing the version for 32 bit. The only files for download are PowerToysSetup-0.21.1-x64.exe and PowerToysSetup-0.21.1-x64.msi.

AskWoody PlusFor what it’s worth, you might try what I found to work today. I had a similar situation with a different error message. After a week of trying everything I could find on Google, I did a repair install of my Win 7 installation, after which the upgrade went smoothly. Whatever problems I was having with my system were fixed by the repair. It’s simple to do, although it did take 3 hours to complete.
Good luck.

AskWoody PlusI suspected that a problem with the registry was blocking the installation, and that the only way to correct this was to do a repair install of Win 7. This wouldn’t be easy, as the last time I tried it, two years ago, it wouldn’t work because of something to do with Microsoft SQL Server 7. Since I hadn’t installed it I couldn’t uninstall it, so I was never able to do the repair. However, I gave it another try today, and despite receiving the same warning, the repair was able to complete. I was then able to perform the upgrade to Win 10 with no problems. From searching Google I know that a lot of people are having difficulty upgrading due to similar types of errors, so maybe a repair install of the existing OS before attempting to upgrade is a general solution that might be effective.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

AskWoody PlusAssuming your PC was 100% stable prior to the failed upgrade attempt (which probably rules out any hardware involvement/fault), you’re looking at upgrading to the latest device drivers and updating/disabling any auto-starting 3rd party software next.
I’ve had no problems with stability under Win 7 32 bit. I did update whatever drivers I could find before attempting to upgrade.
I’m unsure whether a failed upgrade would leave a crash dump that we could analyse but look through the System and Application logs for the crash time and see if you can find an entry that details that a memory dump was saved, if there is, there should also be a path to the file, and probably a (hidden) minidump file in C:WindowsMinidumpxxxxxxxxxxx.dmp. If you can find the minidump, copy it to the Desktop, zip it (Send to > Compressed folder) and attach the zip to a reply.
There are no files in the windowsminidump folder. I’ve looked through event viewer but I’m not knowledgeable enough to know what to look for.

AskWoody PlusAre you using the Media Creation Tool or an ISO you got elsewhere?
I am using the Media Creation Tool. I’ve also tried using the Windows Upgrade Assistant. Both methods gave the same result.

AskWoody PlusCan someone please confirm that I will continue to be able to use WLM to access my personal email account on sympatico.ca? I don’t have an outlook.com account so I’m not concerned about that.

AskWoody PlusHave you checked the registry for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoft with an entry for Microsoft SQL Server or SQL Server
There could also be something in HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoft
The Microsoft page I was directed to above http://support.microsoft.com/kb/276044 details these entries but none of them are in my registry.

RobertG
AskWoody PlusIt must be a microsoft update. Go to control panel > programs and features > click on view installed updates on the left hand side > look for the SQL server update and uninstall it > restart the system > try to repair.
There is no SQL Server update in the list.

AskWoody PlusThis appears to be an update to an existing installation. When I try to install it, it tells me SQL Server 7 is not installed on this computer, so I appear to be going in circles. Is it possible to find an original version to install?
