Still having problems. I got 3020369 (it was hidden), 3161608 from a previous thread, and 3125574 from the Microsoft Update catalog, but they are all standalone packages and “check for updates” cant find them when I double click the package. I tried disconnecting from the internet as JoeP517 suggested to Yobil, but it didn’t work for me. I would really appreciate any help on this matter. Thanks, Gary

Thanks for furnishing KB3161608 ! [Win 7 home premium x64 SP1] I downloaded the update from above but cant get it to run. I double-clicked and it appeared to open the Windows Update Standalone installer, but it isn’t doing anything with that patch and couldn’t find any other patches. I have been trying to patch my computer for several days now. Going to Win Update shows me a list of 26 patches, but when I select a few to install, it says “downloading updates”, but it doesn’t. I let it run for several 20-40 minute intervals with one or 6 patches selected and nothing happens. 0% download. I let it run overnight and it failed and shut off. In one of several tries using only one update it downloaded – fortunately it was the IE11 cumulative update. Susan said in one case that 3161608 should be installed before 3168965 was installed, but I have never been offered 3161608. That’s why I was glad to see it available, but the only thing I knew was to try a double-click.

I looked at a video on WSUS Offline and it looked promising, but it seems like there is still a missing link. Obviously I’m in over my head and would appreciate any suggestions.

Went back through the ones I had trouble with and it worked much better, causing me to assume that my problems were operator error.

      Thanks again BruceR

Yes, thanks, I figured that part out, but it is still intermittent.

Hi – I use Win7 SP1 x64 and very recently up graded IE9–>IE11. I had some problems that worked themselves out. However, the biggest problem was that I got sixty-some patches offered for installation, with many in the KB270nnnn range. I assume that these are patches that I would have picked along the way, had I updated IE sooner. My Windows Update is set on ‘offer the patches and let me decide whether to download and install’, which works pretty well if you are current, but not when a big batch spanning several years is dumped on you. It’s very tedious to search through all the Patch Watch columns and decide what to install.

I accidentally stumbled onto a way to search the Win Secrets article archives and go immediately to past discussions on a particular KB#, which was Very convenient for choosing patches to install. I say stumbled because I could not reproduce this search and it would only work occasionally. I’ve tried to figure it out but no luck. I usually get something like “No information was found for this topic”. I know there has to be a way to do this reproducibly, but I just haven’t been able to find it.

Would someone please tell me the (Windows) Secret? All help greatly appreciated.

      Thanks, Gary

    • Since I had lost my old emails and contacts, I tried fiddling with the parts of WLmail that remained, but no success. Late in the evening I decided to sleep on it before going back to the image. Came in to put it in sleep and found that Windows Live mail was fixed and running. Still OK this morning. Any idea how this happened? I have Windows update set on “notify me but don’t download”, and I’m pretty sure that it was nothing that I did. Only the same four related programs. I should have noted the version.

Back on 8/26/15 WLMail quit receiving email then appeared to have fixed itself two days later. On 11/4/15 WLMail would not open. Shut down and tried 10+ minutes later. It finally opened after several tries in administrative account. Is WLMail just flakey, or do these events coordinate with problems such as were mentioned by jwoods above?

Thanks to jwoods and Tandor for their above replies. Should I be considering a different email program? I like the calendar and other features of WLMail, and I don’t like or need Outlook at all.

Looking at the AV comparison link provided by jwitalka above reminded me again that I rarely see Zone Alarm included in this type of comparison. Is this an indication that ZA is not in the same league as the AV programs considered in the comparisons? I have used ZA (paid, along with the free version of Malware Bytes) for several years with no severe problems. I realize that this is not proof of anything other than maybe a little bit of carefulness and a lot of good luck. I have just been wondering if I should consider trying to find something else a little stronger without bringing on a serious slowdown.

      Thanks for any insights,
      Gary (W7 Home Premium x64 SP1)

A reboot appears to have fixed the n->e problem, although it wasnt occurring in MS Word.

      Thanks for your reply JoeP517!

I dont have a smart phone or other device that I am sync’d with and my home computers are not networked. However, when I want to check mail between downloads I hit sync in Windows Live, so I assume that I am syncd with the Comcast server for my mail. Looked in Pogue’s Win7 Missing Manual to find out how to find the settings and couldn’t find the “sync center”, but found a link to http://live.sync.com, which is apparently a misprint (p 474) that should be sync.live.com, which got me to a sign-in page for One Drive, which I’m not interested in investigating right now.

Is there an easier way to check the sync settings? I’m running Windows Live 2009 in IE9 on a Win7 x64 SP1.

Oh, and every time I type an n in the reply box, it appears as an e (??), so i typed this message in Word then cut and pasted and it worked. Just n – no other letter or character.

      Agaie, thaeks for aey help!

    • in reply to: MS gives us all a bit of good patching weather #1437757

Susan – Thanks for that information. I don’t understand what finally shook these patches loose – that computer has been patched three times since November, with no new software installed (other than patches). I am still one patch short of done: 2892074 (Dec 2013) – security update for Script5.8. Description made it sound important, but I didnt find a rating. Thanks for any help on this one.

I am in the same boat as Aczer – I cannot find reference to the four files Aczer listed or for 2553284, 2760781, or 2597087, all of which are MS Office updates which were released in November or December 2013. Strange that they were just now offered (2/3/14) and not in a previous search (1/22/14). I’ve gone back through the Patch watch columns and discussions in the Lounge, and checked the master patch list and individual monthly patch charts and havent found anything. I have looked up the KB#s on MS sites and can not tell whether these updates are needed or not – some are listed as security updates. Any Suggestions?

      Thanks, Gary

Hi – Relatively newbie question: After using the link to get to the Kaspersky Rescue Disk, it seems as though the article says that you can use this if you already have a Kaspersky product: “If Kaspersky Anti-Virus or Kaspersky Internet Security is installed on your computer, then you can quickly record Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 via the application interface.” However it doesn’t say how to do it if you dont have Kaspersky installed or even whether it can be done. Is this correct or am I missing something?

Also, are flash drives formatted in FAT32, FAT64, or NTSF and how can I tell?

      Thanks, Gary

    • in reply to: Install two updates before shopping for flowers #1375701

I have not had any problems with .Net patches in the past with either XP or Win7.

    • in reply to: Install two updates before shopping for flowers #1375250

This latest Patch Tuesday and the corresponding Patch Watch by Susan Bradley allowed me to get current with my patches on two XP machines, with one exception. I was first offered kb982524, .NET frameworks 3.5 SP1 and 2.0 SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and XP x86, on 4/26/12 despite the fact that the support article is dated 6/21/2010. I have been through the Patch Watch and Patch charts back through early June, 2010, and the only mention I found of KB982524 in Patch Watch was in #249 6/24/2010, where we are told to skip it until Susan says that it’s OK to install, but as near as I can tell, it was never heard from again. I searched the archives to find that comment using 982524 as the key word (only one hit), whereas KB982524 did not find it.

If it were not one of the infamous .NET patches, I would chance it, but in this case I would like a reference or recommendation on whether to install it. I have not had any previous problems with .NET patches in Win XP or in Win7. I really appreciate the trouble Susan Bradley goes to, to provide patching information and recommendations. But this one patch has been bugging me for months.

      Thanks for any help,
      Gary

    • in reply to: Consent.exe but in chinese #1372701

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but do you mean the search that is in the start menu? I used that and found no consent.exe at all. I had Show hidden files and folders enabled. Then I went to System32 and found consent.exe where it is supposed to be, with MS as the manufacturer and the digital signature. But I dont know how to look for other versions.

      Thanks, Gary
