For KB2596014: I ran the free version of MalwareBytes (MBAM) on my Win7 machine, then installed this patch, then reran MBAM again and everything was fine. Looked at patches offered for my XP machine and this one wasnt among them. Is it not for XP? I tried to look in MS support for info but the current info for 2596014 has changed and there is no mention of rootkit but it refers to unsigned drivers and to an error that occurs when the update is installed. I’m curious why that changed, but mostly want to know if this patch is not for XP.

      Thanks for any help,
      Gary

      Question on KB2454826:

I was offered this patch today, but when I looked at my installed patches list in control panel, it shows that it was installed on my computer on 1/13/11. I had already read the Patch Watch prior to that date and marked it to hold and made a note that I did not install it. So I have three questions 1) how did it get there (to which I dont expect an answer and do expect that I somehow installed it accidentally), 2) Why was it offered to me again if it was already installed, and 3) how should I proceed? Uninstall it and install the new one? Uninstall and hold off on installation of the new one? I have seen no mention of this patch in WS Newsletter since Issue #226, 2/10/11, until the post a couple above this one. This is a patch that caused installation problems (BSOD, failure to install, etc.) for many people earlier. Is there an MS11- number associated with KB2454826? I was not able to find one.

      Thanks for any help,
      Gary

I want to add my thanks to Susan Bradley for adding the chart to her column. This chart is exactly what I needed to keep track of these patches!

Deadeye81 – Thank you very much for your quick reply.

You nailed it! I had forgotten to disable Fixit 50593. I found the fixit disabler in the MS support info, but it appears that they have disabled the disabler. Running the cacls routine from the command line solved my problem and the patch installed successfully.

      Much Thanks,
      Gary

Another reason you want the Bulletin (MS) number is that sometimes for a given MS number, the KB numbers may be different for different operating systems or other characteristics. Usually that will be made clear in the Security Bulletin but not necessarily in the KB article, for example, as noted in the first post by joeperez in this thread (fourth post in this thread).

Newbie question: I have successfully updated my Win7 machine and one winXP computer with the February patches, but have not been able to successfully install the critical graphics rendering update KB2483185 on my other XP machine, using windows update. It would try to install but then about halfway through on the progress bar, just stop and say unsuccessful. I tried it several times, restarting between tries. It did not say that it was downloading before it started installing, which I thought was unusual. All other updates on that machine went fine. So I tried downloading the update and then running it from my machine, but got an error message saying “Setup can not copy the file shimgvw.dll. Ensure that the location specified below is correct or change it and insert ‘Windows XP system files’ in the drive you specify.” Box below that said “copy files from [c:windowssystem32]”. I didnt want to try it and mess anything else up, so I cancelled and am seeking help. Also did a Zone Alarm disk scan in there somewhere also – nothing suspicious found.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I also rely heavily on Susan Bradley’s recommendations.
