      bbearren:

Thanks for your prompt and thorough reply. You said:

      >>However, I used an elevated Command Prompt instead, and got it to work as it should. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Your prompt should read C:WindowsSystem32>. Next type the commandline you’ve been using and hit Enter. A dialog box may open saying Disk Cleanup is examining your disk. Once that completes, you’ll get the extended options selection box. I suggest you not select Compress old files (if it’s offered), as that will take a very long time to run, but select any others you want.<<

What did you enter on the Command Line? I tried several things, including 'cleanmgr /sageset:99'. What I got is exactly what I got before. See attachment. The top screen is the Disk Cleanup tab. The middle screen is the list of what is included in the 'Files to delete:' section. And the bottom screen is the More Options tab.

Clicking or checking any item in the 'Files to delete:' section still does not bring me any additional options, and I still don't see the 4 files from the Microsoft Support article that I mentioned.

It appears from your response that you are getting these, so I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks for that link. I read the comments, and folks were having a real problem with it. Near the end of the Comments, I found this link:
      http://zabkat.com/blog/disable-zipfolder-exploring.htm

Look at ‘A simpler solution…’ at the bottom.

I tried it. Works like a charm. [Just remember to back up the Registry 1st]

      Rick:

I had not tried these tests on my XP [only on my Win 7], but I just did them. And I got exactly the same results as you did in your 1st paragraph.

I had already looked (on my Win 7) at modified .theme files which had a [Control Panel/Colors] entry, and these colors were not there. In fact, some of the [Control Panel/Colors] entries I could not find in Window Color and Appearance, and vice versa.

I did a search for Theme Editors. The use of such tools is clearly beyond my capabilities.

So I agree this is a dead end. I’ll live with what I have, and it is too bad that Time & Chaos did not provide any help. They obviously knew about the problem with T&C 7, and fixed it in T&C 8, so one of their programmers knows where these settings are.

Thank you so much for all the effort you put into this.

      Rick:

After an hour or so of testing this morning, I think I have the T&C 7 time color figured out, but I don’t know why. So perhaps you can add some thoughts.

When I initially set up my Win 7 computers, I started with the Windows Classic theme that I use on my XP, and then changed the Window Color and Appearance Options to what I wanted. I saved it–call it MyTheme1. That gives you the dark blue entry in the T&C 7 time column–the same color as you see on your Windows XP.

If, however, on my Win 7, I start with the Windows 7 Basic theme (not an Aero theme), THEN I get the burnt orange entry in the time column–the same color as you see on your Windows 7. I then went to Window Color and Appearance Options, and changed them all to what I have in MyTheme1. But there are still some settings and colors, like on the Windows task bar, etc. that I do not like, so this theme is not a solution for me. However, T&C 7 still has the burnt orange color. So clearly there are some colors that Windows uses that cannot be changed with the Windows Color and Appearance settings.

T&C 8, however, displays the burnt orange even with Windows Classic and MyTheme1 settings. So they obviously changed something so that the burnt orange color will show even if one starts from the Windows Classic theme. I tried T&C 8, but they have ‘improved’ so many things (no Timeline color is one) that I do not find it useful, and have gone back to T&C 7.

So your knowledge of how to sort through the innards of Windows would help here.

SnagIt is a great tool for screen capture. I use it many times/day.

      Rick:

Wow! You did a lot of work here. I have no idea what AU3_Spy or InCTRL5 are, so I trust your judgement.

The screen shot I attached was T&C 7.0.4.5 on a Windows 7 64 bit computer. I use the Blue theme and the Cornflower Blue Timeline color. I tried various themes and Timeline colors, but none had any effect on this bright blue color. Like you, I also looked at each of T&C’s *.ini files, and nothing I changed there affected this color.

I get identical results on my 32 bit XP computer. On my Win 7 64 bit laptop, I get a slightly less intense blue.

I got my designation of R:0 G:0 B:255 (#0000FF in hex) by using a color picker in Snagit Editor. Is what you call 0xFF0000 a hex color? My Color wheel says that #FF0000 is medium red (R;255 G:0 B:0).

The color you got on your attachment (R:250 G:190 B:108, #FABE6C in hex) is about what I get when I run T&C 8, AND what T&C shows in their Help for Ver 7 {but their image is actually from a sister program, Intellect} [see attachment]. Their tech support said that they changed Ver 8 to handle the color on the timeline better, but say it is still set by Windows. (I have asked the question as to what sets this color multiple times, and in different ways, and all I am told is that it is set by Windows.)

Hopefully someone else has an idea here.

This is VERY strange. I used the _Revised.zip spreadsheet you sent me. The Weight and Temp SERIES showed 1 more row than the others when I opened it.

I tried adding 1 row, 2 rows, etc. And I started like you did, clicking on Column A to start the next row. Weight and Temp would not increment at all.

Wonder if there is some Excel option setting that is different between your setup and mine? I didn’t see anything that might address this issue, but I am no expert.

    • in reply to: Problem with a table #1471917

      Maud:

I can’t get that to work. The Weight and Temp SERIES do not seem to increment by adding a row each time I select the next row. I added as many as 6 rows to Temp & Weight beyond where data has been entered, but they never incremented forward. In my testing I was always entering data at least two rows past what I set in Weight & Temp. i.e., if I started with data through 5911, I set Weight/Temp to 5917, and I added data through at least 5919. Weight/Temp never incremented past 5917.

I had first disabled the VBA code which I assume you did also.

All the remainder of the charts updated as they should.

    • in reply to: Problem with a table #1471868

      Yes, exactly that.

      Rory:

Started them at row 13 along with the other columns, and it all works fine now. I then changed the chart starting dates for Weight and Temp, so they do not reflect the dates of earlier rows.

Thanks so much for your help.

      Lex,

The code needs to be placed in the module belonging to Data Sheet. You have placed it in a standard module.

      Maud:

Thanks. Don’t know how I got it in the wrong place to begin with–although as I said, I have never done VBA before.

I did notice that each time I start a new row, Excel seems to be calculating for 5 seconds or so before I can enter any data. Why is this?

      Maud:

Thanks for the code. But I must confess I have no idea what to do with it! I went to the Visual Basic area, and added it under the Modules section of PTS_ChangeSeriesFormula, and then saved it. See the attachment.

But it did not work. Also, I could not figure out how to change the name from Module 1.

So this novice needs some more help to implement the code that you so kindly wrote for me.

Your weight and temp charts don’t use the entire table columns as their source, so you don’t get the benefits of the dynamic ranges.

      Rory:

Is that because I started the Chart SERIES range for Weight at line 2278 and Temp at line 2371, rather than at line 13, where all the rest start? Or is there some other reason?

    • in reply to: Problem with a table #1471363

Can you post the workbook with any confidential information removed/altered?

      Rory:

I have attached it as a .zip file. The columns with the headers ‘if not home’ and ‘& Comments’ had text entries, which I removed. I also removed text entries from the charts.

The charts (and columns) which I have problems with are Weight and Temp. All the other ones update correctly. I manually updated the chart SERIES for Weight and Temp yesterday, so that they all now reflect data through rows 5911.

Feel free to made any additions, changes, etc. This file has a different name than my original, so you cannot damage anything.

      Thanks,

      Lex

Can you post the workbook with any confidential information removed/altered?

      Rory:

I tried to upload the file several times. I get an error message that says it is an invalid file. It is an .xlsb file. Will this forum not accept that type? It is 818 KB.

Or let me know your Email address and I will send it to you directly. I have taken out all sensitive text.

Nice article but I noticed an error regarding FDIC insurance. FDIC only protects bank accounts from bank failure, not from theft.

mbutts is correct. But I think you will find that your accounts are protected. Most banks, credit unions, and brokerage firms have theft insurance that covers everything that you might loose. It may be a hassle if something is stolen, but you won’t be out any cash. Some brokerage firms will supply you with a special card that generates a random number every time you try to make an on-line transaction. Only the holder of the special card and the brokerage firm knows the number. This is especially good if you are traveling. And my bank will send me an Email and/or text message for any withdrawal over an amount I set. They do the same for my credit card, plus every credit card transaction over the internet. This often prevents a theft, because many time a thief will try a small transaction, to see if it goes through, before attempting a major one.

After one of the last big on-line theft scares, I called all my banks and brokerage firms to discuss the issue, and came away satisfied. I suggest you do the same.

Based on what I have read on this thread (especially since I have Win 7 64 bit and Office 2007), I will put the installation of EMET 5 on hold.

Thanks for driving the point home. I understand.

BTW, I use an old DOS program to maintain all my financial records. In addition to saving the data on both my hard drives, I also back it up on floppies—remember those?
